Round 8: Casey Hogan vs. Phillip Lyons
This match for the Top 8 pitted Casey Hogan’s Dredge list against Phillip Lyons’ Maverick build featuring Punishing+Fires. Casey found himself unable to draw into Top 8, as Phillip’s tiebreakers couldn’t sustain that route, so they were forced to play a match for the right to advance.
Turn 1 Gemstone+Mine from Casey indicated he was on a combo archetype, which Phillip wasn’t too happy to see. Fetching Savannah on his own first turn, Phillip cast Mother+of+Runes and passed, nodding as Casey used the end step for Firestorm on Mother+of+Runes, binning Stinkweed+Imp and Cabal+Therapy.
The Imp dredge into Ichorid and two Thugs—Casey untapped and cast Breakthrough for one, dredging thirteen cards to hit Narcomoeba, two Bridge+from+Belows, and Sphinx+of+Lost+Truths. The Narcomoeba flashbacked Cabal+Therapy on Stoneforge+Mystic, hitting one out of Phillip’s hand and generating two Zombies. Phillip untapped, shrugged, and cast Gaddock+Teeg.

“Bah,” Casey said as he untapped and summoned Ichorid from the bin, dredging back Stinkweed+Imp but hitting nothing of note. Just Ichorid swung, the Zombies staying home, and Ichorid’s death led to two more Zombies. Phillip played Wasteland and resolved Knight+of+the+Reliquary, but it was only a 3/3 for now.
The next dredge hit Narcomoeba and another Bridge+from+Below, sending Casey into the tank. With Phillip on 14, Casey attacked with everyone. Knight blocked a Zombie, and Phillip took 9, falling to 5 life. Afterward, Casey cast Firestorm for two to kill both of Phillip’s creatures. That gave him the ability to flashback Dread+Return on Angel+of+Despair, which he used to eliminate Savannah.
Phillip drew for his turn, and promptly conceded.

Taiga and Green Sun’s Zenith for Dryad+Arbor ended Phillip’s turn, while Casey played his own “accelerant” off City+of+Brass: Putrid+Imp. Grove+of+the+Burnwillows from Phillip gave him Green Sun’s Zenith for two, which searched up Scavenging Ooze—Casey sighed. Golgari+Grave-Troll hit Casey’s bin during the upkeep, and he dredge into two Bridges plus a Dread+Return and a Golgari+Grave-Troll. Discarding the Troll again, Casey swung for 2 damage.
Phillip played Wasteland and swung with the Ooze for 2 damage, passing afterward. During Casey’s upkeep, Phillip decided to remove Troll and Thug, followed by Imp when Casey discarded it. Another Imp hit the bin, and Casey dredged into Sphinx, Ichorid, and Flame-kin Zealot—not much. He played Undiscovered+Paradise and then cast his Stinkweed+Imp, swinging for 2 damage with the Putrid+Imp.
Maze+of+Ith from Phillip gave him an out to that Putrid+Imp. Scavenging+Ooze consumed Ichorid, and Wasteland destroyed City+of+Brass. Casey picked up his Paradise and swung, stymied by Maze for now. The Ooze ate Sphinx and Flame-kin+Zealot during Casey’s end step.
Phillip drew and passed, Casey repeating the same on his own turn. During the end step, Casey lost both his Bridges and his Dread+Return, slowly being dissembled by the Ooze as Phillip played carefully. Once he found Punishing+Fire, this game appeared to be over—it eliminated Stinkweed+Imp, and then Casey attacked for 9 damage after removing the dead Stinkweed. Casey fell to 11, drew, and found nothing good enough—he conceded.

Casey took the play for game 3, starting on Gemstone+Mine and Putrid+Imp. Noble+Hierarch from Phillip earned no response, and Stinkweed+Imp dredged into another Imp and a Grave-Troll. Careful+Study hit Bridge+from+Below and a bunch more dredgers, but no engine cards. Casey attacked, and passed the turn. Phillip used his upkeep to Enlightened+Tutor for Tormod’s Crypt, casting it and a Qasali+Pridemage.
He passed, and Casey moved onto his upkeep. He dredged a Thud, hitting just Dread+Return, and appeared to be in bad shape. He swung for 2 damage and cast the Thug, passing turn. Swinging for 4 damage with Pridemage, Phillip cast Knight+of+the+Reliquary.
Casey discarded Cabal+Therapy to his Putrid+Imp, but Phillip responded with the Crypt—a bit premature, probably. Attacking or a point, Casey concluded his turn. Swords+to+Plowshares on Golgari+Thug from Phillip cleared the way for an attack with Pridemage, and Casey fell to 12. Dredging into two Bridges and two Ichorids during his upkeep thanks to Stinkweed+Imp, Casey passed the turn after attacking. Swords+to+Plowshares during the end step on the Putrid+Imp mostly removed Casey from the game along with his creature.
Umezawa’s Jitte from Phillip landed on Qasali+Pridemage via a Knight+of+the+Reliquary activation—now Casey might be able to go off without fearing Bojuka+Bog, if he would bait those counters out somehow. During Casey’s upkeep, he cast Rites+of+Initiation to discard a dredge, but Phillip responded with a Jitte kill on Noble to remove those two Bridges. Just Ichorid’s return attacked, for 3 damage, and Casey got a Zombie token during the end step with a new Bridge he’d dredged into.
Chumping the Pridemage with a Zombie token, Casey sighed as he lost another Bridge to Jitte on Mother+of+Runes this time. He dredge into two Narcomoebas (finally) on the next turn, but he was at 4 life and dead on the board.
