Round 8: Donnie Peck vs. David Kring
Donnie hit running Jaces to cinch game 3.
Fellow Omaha players Donnie and David met this round to play for Top 16. Donnie came with Esper Stoneblade, but David was packing the Dream halls deck popularized recently by Ari Lax.
David started the match on the play, and immediately dropped to six while Donny quickly kept. Finding an unsatisfactory six, David dropped to five. Then four. Misty Rainforest for Island and Preordain kept both cards in place, while Donnie just dropped Flooded Strand.
Another Preordain from David, but he failed to find a second land with it and passed. Fetching Underground Sea, Donnie played Karakas and Stoneforge Mystic for Umezawa’s Jitte. Another pass from David, then Donnie played Flooded Strand and sent turn.
Brainstorm for David resolved, then he played Misty Rainforest. Donnie Forged Batterskull in during the end step, and David responded by fetching Island. Untapping, Donnie cracked Marsh Flats for Tundra and Vindicated Island. Force of Will removing Force of Will countered, but Donnie Forced back pitching Intuition. He attacked David to 12, and passed.
No plays from David, and Donne attacked him to 7 and passed. Fetchland for David, and then he took 5 again and fell to 2. Ancient Tomb off the top put him no closer to winning the game, and David tapped it to kill himself and go to game 2.

“I wish I knew what was in your deck,” Donnie said. “Ask me, and I’ll tell you!” David replied. Queried about Disenchant targets beyond Dream Halls, David answered that he did have more targets in his sideboard… but that didn’t tell Donnie much at all, really. David took the play and played Island, while Donnie kept and dropped Plains.
Misty Rainforest for David and then Tundra followed by Stoneforge Mystic on turn 2. In response, David cracked for Underground Sea and cast Lim-Dul’s Vault. Force of Will removing Snapcaster countered, and Stoneforge found Sword of Feast and Famine. Ancient Tomb and Jace, the Mind Sculptor earned another Force of Will from Donnie, prompting cries of incredulity.
Donnie Brainstormed then played Island, passing the turn. David played a fetchland and went to 15 by activating Ancient Tomb to cast Show and Tell. That put Progenitus and Sword of Feast and Famine into play, one significantly more potent than the other.

David's Dream Halls struggled to come online.
Each player kept, and Donnie began with inquisition to discard Show and Tell, leaving Lim-dul’s Vault, Daze, Force of Will, and lands. Just Island for David on turn 1, and Donnie fired Thoughtseize after playing Flooded Strand. The new card was a fetch, and Donnie now took the Vault to leave David floundering.
Another Island for David, and pass. Donnie fetched Tundra then played Scrubland and cast Lingering Souls. David played Ancient Tomb and took 2 to cast Jace, the Mind Sculptor. David brainstormed with the planeswalker, and ended the turn. Donnie Brainstormed and then attacked Jace for two, flashbacking the Lingering Souls after Inquisition of Kozilek stole Daze, but spotted Conflux and Show and Tell.
Another brainstorm, and David could threaten to start going off with a Dream Halls if he hit one… but he didn’t. Fetchland, go. Donnie began with Brainstorm, throwing back a couple cards before killing Jace and attacking David to 15. Ponder afterward gave Donnie Flooded Strand and he passed the turn, just Force for defense. David fetched to shuffle, but had no other plays.
Donnie did the same before drawing for turn, and his attack reduced David to 10. Donnie could’ve passed with double Force available, but he tried to resolve Jace and lost the planeswalker to hardcast Force of Will through Ancient Tomb. Another Ancient Tomb from David, and he tried Dream Halls on his next turn, resolving it with Force of Will, pitching Force—but he no longer had any cards to let him cast the Conflux.
Putting David to 1 life, Donnie played the Jace he’d topdecked to fateseal David, leaving a non-colored card in place. David drew it, and conceded.
