Round 8: Florian Nolting vs. Andrew Schneider
Andrew's Prices were powerful in this pairing.
A matchup between pretty similar decks in this round: Florian’s RUG Delver deck against Andrew’s U/R Delver deck, similar to the build Andrew Shrout championed later last year. The matchup revolved around creatures and burn, with Tarmogoyf and Mongoose likely giving Florian the edge.
Florian started the first game by mulliganing to six, but a pensive keep from Andrew kept him at seven cards. Florian admitted to having a lot of mulligans today, but that hadn’t stopped him from accruing several wins to this point. He only needed one more, after all. Dropping to five just as fast, his back appeared to be nearing the wall. Misty Rainforest and pass for Florian, responding to Andrew’s Arid Mesa crack with a fetch for Volcanic Island and Stifle.
Turn 2 for Florian brought him no land, however, and he passed. Andrew played Volcanic Island and Goblin Guide, waiting for a reaction and receiving none—he attacked for 2, revealing Delver of Secrets and losing his Guide to Lightning Bolt. Florian drew Delver, cast Ponder, and passed the turn after shuffling the deck and failing to topdeck a land.
Another Volcanic Island and another Goblin Guide for Andrew, who landed the attack for 2 and followed with Grim Lavamancer after revealing a Daze on Florian’s deck. Lightning Bolt terminated the Lavamancer, and Florian ended his turn, He took 2 damage from Guide as he revealed Wasteland, Andrew passing afterward.
Florian drew Tropical Island and played it, responding to the next Goblin Guide attack with Brainstorm, revealing Wasteland (again) and falling to 13. He Stifled another fetch from Andrew, but Andrew just played Scalding Tarn and passed the turn.
Casting Ponder, Florian didn’t like the top three again, shuffling. He Wastelanded a Volcanic Island and cast Delver of Secrets, passing to Andrew. Mountain for Andrew preceded Chain Lightning on Delver, and Florian defended with Force of Will, pitching Stifle. Goblin Guide revealed Nimble Mongoose, and Andrew ended his turn with two up.
Upkeep Brainstorm for Florian, hoping to reset the top of the deck; he revealed Daze to transform, and passed without an attack. Andrew Pondered himself, leaving the top three, and cast Chain Lightning to clear the way. An attack for 2 damage revealed Misty Rainforest, ending Andrew’s turn.
Back under pressure, Florian cast Nimble Mongoose and passed. Andrew passed, and Florian deployed a second mongoose before attacking with the first, beginning to clock his opponent. Andrew fetched during the end of Florian’s turn, casting price of Progress—Florian Force of Willed to counter it, removing an awkward card… Daze, whose alternate cost could have preserved his weakness to future Prices, or even allowed him to minimize this one.
Untapping, Andrew played Snapcaster Mage on Price of Progress, Florian failing to find with a fetch but still taking 4 damage from Price. Another Goblin Guide gave Andrew exactly the ability to attack for lethal.

Florian remained upbeat and battled hard, despite two mulls to five.
Florian took the play and found himself again stuck mulliganing. First to six cards, and then all the way to five once more. Tropical Island and Ponder began the recovery, keeping three cards. Andrew Pondered as well via Island, also leaving them there. Florian’s turn 2 featured fetchland and another Ponder, leaving them there before passing to Andrew, who cast Delver of Secrets.
Playing Scalding Tarn, Florian cracked his Misty and cast Tarmogoyf. Delver triggered for Andrew by revealing Price of Progress, a real danger, and he followed that with Ponder. The top three remained in place, Andrew swinging for 3 damage and then fetching Mountain with Arid Mesa before ending the turn.
Brainstorm before damage boosted Tarmogoyf by a point for Florian, evening the scores at 16 apiece. When Florian fetched with Scalding Tarn, Andrew responded with Submerge on the Tarmogoyf, shuffling it away and taking a huge lead, even as Florian searched up another Volcanic Island. He passed without a play, Andrew dropping Snapcaster Mage during the end step. An upkeep Lightning Bolt from Florian blasted the bug, but Andrew had another Snapcaster Mage, this time actually using the trigger for a Ponder. He swung with the first, and ended the turn with a fetch ready to go.
Playing Wasteland to hedge against Price, Florian cast Tarmogoyf. He Bolted an attacking Snapcaster Mage, blocking the second and losing his Tarmogoyf to a post-combat Chain Lightning, but that was all Andrew could muster. Out of gas, he passed—Florian drew and cast Nimble Mongoose, easily at threshold already. Andrew Brainstormed in reply, fetching afterward but stuck with the Mongoose. He cast Price of Progress, with Florian sitting on four nonbasics—floating a red, Florian Wasted his own Volcanic and life totals became 9-13 in favor of Andrew, who passed.
Swinging with the Mongoose, Florian passed, Andrew doing the same when he failed to find a relevant play. He then fell to 7, and once Florian cast Delver of Secrets Andrew aimed Price of Progress at Florian, bringing him to 5 life. Another Price made that 1 life, and a Daze against the follow-up Pyroblast did not hold, allowing Snapcaster Mage to swing for lethal.
