Round 8: Gerry Thompson vs. Alex Bertoncini
Two of the most winning players and familiar faces from the Open Series met up at 6-1. Would Gerry move on to Day 2 at 7-1 with Lands or would Alex find a way to win a tough matchup for his Esper Deathblade build?
Gerry plays Life From the Loam.
Both players went down to six cards and Gerry led things off with an Exploration off a Forest and then played a Maze of Ith. Alex opted for a Ponder off a Tundra then shuffled and drew a card. Gerry used Wasteland on the Tundra and played a Dark Depths.
Alex played an Underground Sea and passed. Gerry used another Wasteland on the dual and Alex responded with a Brainstorm before putting the land in the bin. Alex found a Flooded Strand and passed. Gerry played another Exploration and passed with no land drop. Alex passed back after playing another Flooded Strand. Gerry played a Wasteland and passed.
Alex searched up an Underground Sea to Brainstorm then played a Scrubland to use Thoughtseize to take Gerry’s Gamble. Gerry used the Wasteland on the Underground Sea and added a Manabond to his board before passing. Alex searched up another Underground Sea to Brainstorm and played a Marsh Flats and passed. Gerry drew a card but had no play. Alex searched up a Tundra and played Snapcaster Mage to Brainstorm. Alex fetched up another dual and dropped a Jace, the Mind Sculptor and fate sealed Gerry.
Gerry played his third Exploration and passed back. Alex fate sealed again and kept the card on top then played Stoneforge Mystic to search up a Batterskull. Gerry drew a card and shipped the turn. Alex fate sealed again with Jace, leaving the card on top and passed. Gerry played a land and passed. Gerry used a Punishing Fire on Alex’s newly played Deathrite Shaman and passed after Alex got the Batterskull into play. Alex fate sealed a card to the bottom and attacked Gerry for three then dropped True-Name Nemesis. Gerry found a Thespian Stage and passed.
Alex fate sealed again and attacked Gerry down to 13. Gerry made a token of himself at the end of turn then attacked with it but Alex had the Swords to Plowshares. After that Gerry scooped up his cards facing down a Jace that was ready to ultimate.

Alex kept his seven and Gerry went down to five on the play.
“I’m still about 40 percent,” Alex said after Gerry’s second mulligan.
Gerry started things with a Mox Diamond to cycle a Tranquil Thicket and played a Gamble off a Grove of the Burnwillows which resulted in Gerry discarding a Crop Rotation. Alex passed after playing a Marsh Flats. Gerry played Life From the Loam off his Thespian Stage and passed. Alex had another fetch land and Gerry dredged then played Loam again and passed back after dropping a Taiga.
Alex simply played a third fetch land and shipped the turn. Gerry dredged again and Alex fetched up three lands to play a Vendilion Clique to target Gerry during his draw step and made Gerry put Life From the Loam on the bottom. Gerry cycled the Thicket and played Exploration and then added Rishadan Port and another Taiga to the board. Gerry ended his turn with a Chalice of the Void.
Alex attacked Gerry down to 15 with the Clique then Alex played Council’s Judgment which got rid of the Chalice. Gerry played a Dark Depths and passed, but kept Alex’s Underground Sea in check with the Port. Alex made a 20/20 at the end of the turn, but Alex had the Swords to deal with it. Gerry played Oracle of Mul Daya, but Alex had another Swords for it.
Alex dropped Gerry to 34 and played Jace again and started fate sealing. Gerry passed and Alex hit Gerry to 31 and added a Liliana of the Veil and Deathrite Shaman. Gerry played a Rishadan Port and passed. Alex used Surgical Extraction on Dark Depths, upped his Planeswalkers and knocked Gerry to 28. Gerry used Life From the Loam to get Thespian Stage and Maze of Ith back, but Alex used the Shaman to eat the third target, Tranquil Thicket. Alex then used the Shaman on the Life From the Loam, kept moving his Planeswalkers up and attacked with the Clique. Gerry ended the turn by copying Maze of Ith with Stage and untapped to use Crop Rotation on the Taiga to get Horizon Canopy. Gerry drew a card off the Horizon, but saw a blank and extended the hand.
