Round 8: Jim Davis vs. Reuben Bresler
Both players were already locked for Day 2 at 5-2, but an extra win would help their odds at making a run at Top 8. Would Jim finish the day strong behind his Esper Control deck, or would Reuben enter Day 2 on fire with his Mono-Red Aggro list?
Reuben grins despite having his thoughts seized.
Jim won the die roll and chose to play, he also chose to mulligan down to six cards. Reuben kept his seven. Jim started things off with a Temple of Deceit. Rueben opened things up with an unleashed Rakdos Cackler off a Mountain. Jim played and a land and passed, while Reuben added a Mutavault and attacked for two. Reuben followed it up with a Firefist Striker that met a Syncopate. Jim played a turn-3 Thoughtseize and took a Rakdos Cackler dropping him down to 16.
Reuben attacked with the Cackler and his land then finished his turn by adding a Foundry Street Denizen to the board. Jim had a fourth land and passed back. Reuben attacked with the team and dropped Jim to 7. Reuben added another Mountain to the board and passed the turn. Jim drew for the turn, thought a bit, and finally scooped them up. “Could have gone better,” Jim said as the two went to their sideboards.

Jim elected to be on the play and kept his seven while Reuben went to Paris this time. Reuben immediately threw his six back and found a suitable five. Jim started with a Temple of Enlightenment and Reuben had a turn-1 Firedrinker Satyr. Jim had another temple, this time of Silence, and Reuben got in for two before playing a Burning-Tree Emissary that let him play a Ghore-House Chainwalker. Jim added a third temple and used a Last Breath on the Firedrinker Satyr. Reuben opted to play a Chandra’s Phoenix and dropped Jim to 11 with an attack from his team.
Jim found a Jace, Architect of Thought and ticked it up. Reuben pondered for a moment then played another Phoenix and dropped Jim to 6, choosing to ignore the planeswalker. Jim ticked up Jace, then shocked himself to play an untapped Godless Shrine then used a Detention Sphere on the pair of Phoenixes and passed with two mana up, including a Mutavault. Reuben sent in the team and Jim activated his Mutavault, but before blocks Reuben used a Searing Blood on it and Jim extended the hand.
