Round 8: Matt Costa vs. Greg Sochacki
Matt’s on track for a second Top 8 if he wins this round, while Greg is a contender on Elves for the Legacy event. Both decks are capable of blistering starts, but if Matt can control the board and start attacking with a creature or two, he’ll close out games before Greg’s engine comes online.
Greg's Elves couldn't quite swarm the board against Matt's fast clock.
On the play, Matt kept his starting hand and led Scalding Tarn, while Greg had Verdant Catacombs for Forest and Llanowar Elves. Matt fetched Volcanic Island and cast Thought Scour during the end step, pitching two lands, and Dazed the Elves. He fetched again with Misty Rainforest on his turn for Tropical Island, casting Nimble Mongoose.
Only a card from threshold, Greg knew Matt’s Goose would grow fast. He tapped out for Llanowar Elves and Fyndhorn Elves, and Matt hit threshold with Ponder on the following turn. He shuffled the deck for a new card, and followed with Forked Bolt to clear the Elves and an attack for 3 damage.
Falling behind, Greg cast Quirion Ranger and played Gaea’s Cradle, then Green Sun’s Zenith for one to get Wirewood Symbiote. That enabled a block and bounce when Mongoose attacked, and Matt had to pass with nothing beyond a land. Greg replayed Ranger and then cast Archdruid, but Matt Force of Willed removing Thought Scour to counter. He took 1 from the Symbiote when Greg attacked.
Matt swung again with Mongoose, and then cast Tarmogoyf. Greg drew and played Glimpse of Nature, Matt responding with a fetch for Volcanic Island before casting Brainstorm and Force of Willing again, removing Ponder.
Another attack, and Greg dropped to 13. He played Llanowar Elves, Quirion Ranger, and then cast Elvish Visionary. Casting the Visionary to draw a card, Matt replied by Bolting the Symbiote. Greg drew another Visionary and cast it, then passed the turn. Matt attacked again, 7 damage landing to put Greg at 6. Wasteland on Gaea’s Cradle restricted Greg’s movement, and he had to tap all his mana to pay for Summoner’s Pact.
Bouncing Forest, untapping Llanowar Elves, and replaying the Forest, Greg cast Fyndhorn Elves and shipped the turn. Matt attacked, earning a chump from one Visionary, and played another Mongoose. Greg played Elvish Archdruid on the next turn, then Wirewood Symbiote—things were getting dangerous for Matt!
His opponent was on 3, so any creature was lethal. Matt sent all three of them, and Greg blocked Tarmogoyf with his last Visionary, Mongoose with Archdruid and Llanowar Elves, then the other Mongoose with Quirion Ranger and Fyndhorn Elves. Greg bounced his Visionary and lost all of his other creatures except for Symbiote and the Visionary in his hand, but killed the Mongooses. Matt played a third, and passed.
Greg played Visionary twice and passed the turn tapped out. Matt attacked with both creatures, killing Symbiote as the Visionary bounced again. Greg groaned as he drew his card, fetching down to 1 life. He cast Visionary, another Visionary, and then Nettle Sentinel. Matt attacked with both creatures, and Greg chumped with a Visionary and Sentinel.
Matt's always ready to sling some spells.
Birchlore Ranger and Elvish Visionary alongside Wirewood Symbiote kept Greg dancing, although he had to Summoner’s Pact to find them. Greg Living Wished, tapping out to do so with just Birchlore Rangers around to make a play. Greg played Gaea’s Cradle through the Wish, and passed.
Matt Pondered and then Lightning Bolted Greg for the win.
Matt 1, Greg 0
Greg led Llanowar Elves, and Matt started Delver of Secrets via Volcanic Island. Greg turn 2’d Steely Resolve for Elves, but matt Submerged in response. Quirion Ranger resolved, and Greg passed. Matt traded Delver with the Ranger in an attack and then cast a new Delver, followed by a fetch to let him play Nimble Mongoose.
Wirewood Symbiote and Llanowar Elves hit the board, but Forked Bolt slew the Insect before an attack. Elves traded with the Delver, and Matt played another Nimble Mongoose with Scalding Tarn already in play to get threshold. Greg had an Elvish Visionary, and passed.
Matt attacked with both Mongoose into the Visionary, fetching before damage after a block and putting Greg to 15. He played another Visionary on his next turn, Matt, continuing to advance with Scavenging Ooze on the board.
The Ooze quickly grew, feeding on the dead Elves, and once it connected a Lightning Bolt to the face finished the match.
