Round 8: Michael Dye vs. Nathan Zamora
Standard Open champion Michael Dye looks to double his trophy count.
After winning the Standard Open early this morning, Michael Dye and his Painter's Servant-Grindstone deck was forced into a win-and-in situation against Nathan Zamora with Aggro Loam. It didn't seem like a good matchup to begin with, and a double mulligan into no lands didn't help his chances.
A quick Dark Confidant and Seismic Assault made short work of Michael's life total after the champ blew a pair of Simian Spirit Guides to power out Blood Moon against Badlands and Taiga. It was an incorrect guess, but with so few cards he had to make an attempt at something. Land after land flew at Michael's face and we were quickly on to game two.
Nathan 1, Michael 0
Michael turned the tides in game two, coming out firing with Leyline of the Void and Painter's Servant on the first turn, but he lost the key piece to Punishing Fire after blocking an onrushing Dark Confidant. Michael groaned when he drew Grindstone on the very next turn, but he refilled with another Painter's Servant and a Goblin Welder for protection soon after. Nathan had the Seismic Assault, but one of his “lands” was a Mox Diamond and he was unable to disrupt Michael from grinding his library away.
Modern powerhouse Aggro Loam looks to make the transition to Legacy in the hands of Nathan Zamora.
Nathan 1, Michael 1
Another Leyline of the Void made its way into play on Michael's side to start the final game while Nathan set up his manabase with a pair of dual lands. Michael fired the first volley, fetching up Painter's Servant with Imperial Recruiter and Nathan was still content to sit on his mana.
Painter's Servant arrived and Michael called red, but that fell right into Nathan's trap. Pyroblast crushed the artifact creature and Surgical Extraction completely deflated the champ, Extracting all of Michael's Painter's Servants and leaving him with just an anemic beatdown deck that had no chance against Nathan's robust one.
Dark Confidant and Tarmogoyf made their way into play and started the beatdown after Diabolic Edict cleared out the Imperial Recruiter. Michael was stuck in reverse without mana or any real action to play, and a few attack steps later his dreams of a double trophy weekend were crushed.
Nathan Zamora wins the match 2-1
