Round 8: Tom Ross vs. Shaheen Soorani
“You need another token? Come on!” Shaheen started the match sending congratulations to the Season Two Invitational winner. Would Tom pilot Rabble Red and Infect to an X-1 record on Day or would Shaheen get the honors playing Esper in both formats?
Tom considers his next play.
Tom went to six cards and Shaheen started things off with a Temple of Silence on the play. Tom had a Turn-1 Foundry Street Denizen and Shaheen played a Thoughtseize on Turn-2, getting a Legion Loyalist. Tom attacked and played a Mutavault and a Firefist Striker. Shaheen used another Thoughtseize to get a Stoke the Flames and Tom played a Hall of Triumph and attacked. Shaheen untapped and cleaned the board with a Supreme Verdict.
Tom didn’t have much to rebuild with so he played a land and attacked with his Mutavault. Shaheen played a land and passed and Tom attacked with his Mutavault, but Shaheen had an answer for the land in Devour Flesh. Tom played another Denizen and a Firefist Striker, but Shaheen untapped and slammed Elspeth, Sun’s Champion, followed up with another Verdict and Tom had seen enough.

Tom was on the play and kept his opener and kicked things off with a Firedrinker Satyr while Shaheen started with a Temple of Deceit. Tom played two copies of Burning-Tree Emissary and attacked for 3 and passed it over to Shaheen, who played a Mutavault and passed.
Tom sent in the team and Shaheen had an Ultimate Price for the Satyr so Tom landed an Eidolon of the Great Revel while his opponent was tapped out. Shaheen just played a temple and passed so Tom played a Mountain and considered his plays. Tom attacked with his Emissaries and passed without adding to the board. Shaheen cleaned the board with a Verdict so Tom responded by tapping his Eidolon to hit Shaheen with a Stoke the Flames. Tom untapped and slammed Goblin Rabblemaster and used a Titan’s Strength on the hasty token to win the game.
Shaheen 1, Tom 1
Shaheen waits for Tom’s next play.
Both liked their openers and Shaheen had a Temple of Deceit while Tom had a Rakdos Cackler. Shaheen played a Temple of Enlightenment so Tom attacked for 2 and played a Burning-Tree Emissary. Shaheen used a Sin Collector to get a Stoke the Flames from Tom so Tom untapped and slammed a Hall of Triumph and attacked with his team. Shaheen fell to 15 after chumping the Cackler.
Shaheen played another temple and passed. Tom fired up his Mutavault and sent in the team so Shaheen animated his Mutavault and blocked Tom’s then before damage tapped it and the temple to use a Doom Blade on the BTE. Shaheen slammed a Verdict and passed so Tom attacked with his second Mutavault and played a Cackler.
Shaheen landed Jace, Architect of Thought and ticked it up. Tom played another BTE and attacked Shaheen down to 7 with the Cackler and Mutavault. Shaheen landed a Detention Sphere on the Hall of Triumph and upped Jace then passed after another temple. Tom attacked with a Cackler, BTE, and a Mutavault so Shaheen killed the land with his own after the Jace trigger and dropped to 5.
Shaheen revealed three with Jace and ended up with a Doom Blade then used a Banishing Light on the Cackler and passed. Tom slammed an Ash Zealot and sent his team at Shaheen, Shaheen blocked with his Mutavault to trade with the BTE then used a Doom Blade on the Zealot. Shaheen got a Sphinx’s Revelation off Jace and used it for three to go to 8 and passed so Tom landed a Firedrinker Satyr.
Shaheen played a land and ticked up Jace before passing. Tom tried to kill Jace with his Satyr but after two pumps Shaheen killed it with an Ultimate Price. Shaheen got another Revelation of Jace and used it on his turn for six and went to 14. Tom was able to kill Jace with a Rabblemaster off the top and passed. Shaheen found a Detention Sphere for the Rabblemaster and went to 12 to play two Fiendslayer Paladins. Tom attacked with his goblin token and Shaheen called the bluff and blocked with both lifelinkers and Tom called it a day.
