Round 9: David Doberne (4-Color Pod) vs. Eric Fairchild (Zombies)
Eric Fairchild is at the top of the standings with Zombies.
Riding high on just one loss, both David and Eric are in striking distance of the Top 8, but they were going to need to get it done here with just one round to go after this.
David’s Four-Color Pod deck got to lead off with the strong opening of Rampant Growth into Huntmaster of the Fells, but Eric Zombies weren’t going to let him off easy. A pair of Diregraf Ghouls and a Gravecrawler shambled into play over the first two turns and Cemetery Reaper put Eric’s undead team over the top of David’s pair of 2/2s.
Realizing he had to play defense or risk a quick death, David shoved his guys in front of a Diregraf Ghoul, losing Huntmaster of the Fells and falling to 14 in the process. He went back to work with Blade Splicer and Rampant Growth, dropping to 8 after Eric’s attack, then 6 from a newfound Geralf’s Messenger and if Eric could find any removal or a Mortarpod, David would be in a world of hurt.
Instead, Wurmcoil Engine slammed onto the table as David found a burly protector, but Eric still mashed his guys into the red zone, losing a Gravecrawler and Diregraf Ghoul, while getting enough damage on the Wurmcoil Engine to finish it off with Mortarpod. The brief respite was the opening David needed to get shut down the Cemetery Reaper with Fiend Hunter and go on offense with his army of 3/3s. He fell back to 7 on Eric’s attack, but Primeval Titan gave him the massive body he needed to completely gum up the ground.
The zombies were halted in their tracks and with two of them being Gravecrawlers, Eric was unable to stop enough damage to not be dead on David’s next attack.

David Doberne is playing Four-Color Birthing Pod in the Standard Open.
Both players shipped their first hands back and Eric leaped out to an early lead with Diregraf Ghoul into Distress, snagging Oblivion Ring from David’s slow hand. He was stymied by an upkeeped Deceiver Exarch that tapped a land, but he was still able to make a play with a Mortarpod off a new Swamp.
Thrun, the Last Troll put David fully in control, but Highborn Ghoul and Geralf’s Messenger looked to wrestle the advantage back to Eric’s side. Geist-Honored Monk came back over the top, but the Mortarpod combined with a Tragic Slip to take care of a spirit token and the large monk, leaving Thrun, the Last Troll to attack alone.
The Highborn Ghoul got to work on David’s life total, but Celestial Purge put a quick stop to the Geralf’s Messenger after Phantasmal Image cloned it, and suddenly David was the one doing big chunks of damage and Eric defending with his undersized zombies. Huntmaster of the Fells added to the mess of creatures on David’s side and Eric, stuck on three lands, had seen enough.
