Round 9: David McDarby vs. Matt Devine
One of a few players from yesterday's Top 8 performing well in Legacy, David McDarby was packing Sneak and Show, a combo deck based on jamming fatties into play on the cheap. Matt Devine, his opponent, would be hard-pressed to match those monsters with Maverick.
Matt's facing a tough matchup for Maverick in the combo deck.
Taiga on turn 1 began the game, while David played Scalding Tarn and quickly passed. An odd turn 2 Green Sun's Zenith for zero from the opponent gave David pause, no second land in sight, and he decided to Force of Will the spell, removing Show and Tell. Sure enough, only Maze of Ith followed. David played Scalding Tarn, and passed.
Savannah off the top gave Matt Stoneforge Mystic, and David replied by breaking Scalding Tarn for Island and casting Brainstorm. The spell resolved, and Stoneforge joined the board shortly after, searching for Sword of Feast and Famine. David fetched another Island with his Tarn during the end step, untapping into Mountain and Show and Tell.
Matt gave it a quick read and then nodded, putting Batterskull into play against Progenitus. Breaking Wooded Foothills, Matt searched for another Savannah and passed the turn. Progenitus attacked Matt to 9 life, and David passed after adding City of Traitors to the board.
Sword landed during the end step, but Matt decided to concede after drawing a card for the turn.
David 1, Matt 0
Matt kept for the second game, but David took a mulligan to six. Zenith for Dryad Arbor of Savannah began the game, and David's only reply was Misty Rainforest. Stoneforge Mystic dug up Sword of Feast and Famine on turn 2 for Matt, but he lacked a land drop and had to pass after that. On turn 2, David fetched Volcanic Island with Misty Rainforest and cast Brainstorm. He whiffed on land, and passed.
Also missing a land, Matt passed. David revealed himself o have been slow-rolling Ancient Tomb, and again had Show and Tell for the powerful Progenitus. Knight of the Reliquary from Matt faced him down, but would it be enough? Sword, of course, would help.
Carrying the Sword, Knight attacked for 5 damage. David discarded Intuition, and all Matt could really do is jam more dudes onto the board, relying on his Swords to Plowshares to get him above 20 and survive two hits. Progenitus swung him to 9 once again, and David passed—Batterskull hit the field during his end step.
David McDarby has his fingers-crossed, a chance at his second Top 8 on the weekend in sight.
Matt cast Noble Hierarch, David Brainstorming in response. He didn't find much, and his Progenitus wasn't capable of racing that Germ token once it could pick up Sword of Feast and Famine. He drew one more card, and conceded.
David 1, Matt 1
A mulligan to five for David began the third game, while Matt stood pat on seven. He started with misty Rainforest, while Matt simply played Dryad Arbor. On turn 2, David played City of Traitors and fetched up Island, casting Show and Tell. Progenitus for the third time—Knight of the Reliquary for Matt. This time, the race certainly favored David by a fair margin! Matt drew and fetched, searching for Savannah and casting Gaddock Teeg, but without an attack available.
David shrugged, and attacked for 10 damage.
Playing Taiga, Matt stared at the board. He cast Enlightened Tutor, and David Spell Pierced to tap Matt out. A search through the library, and a sigh—Matt should have spent that Tutor on the last turn, fetching Phyrexian Metamorph.
Another attack for 10 finished the job.
David 2, Matt 1
