Round 9: Greg Giard vs. Robby Connolly
Robby’s sole loss on the day was to Chalice of the Void, which made the RUG player less than thrilled to be playing Greg Giard for Top 8. Greg’s MUD list had performed on and off the camera today, and he too was just one win from locking Top 8.
Greg's MUD list has powered out tough cards like Chalice, Trinisphere.
Turn 1 Ancient Tomb and Chalice of the Void from Greg met a Daze from Robby, who had started with Delver of Secrets on turn 1. He attacked, Wastelanded the Ancient Tomb, and passed the turn. Greg had just Darksteel Citadel, and Robby fetched before playing Nimble Mongoose.
Robby revealed Lightning Bolt to Delver and attacked for 4 damage, casting Tarmogoyf. Greg was stuck on just that Citadel, and he took 7 damage on Robby’s next attack to go to 5 life. One more Mongoose, and it was over.
“So if I’m on the play, I win?” Greg said, and Robby laughed. “Yeah, it’s like that,” Robby replied.
Robby 1, Greg 0
Each player mulliganed to start the second game, and kept their six. Greg started Wasteland on turn 1, and Robby went with Volcanic Island and Delver of Secrets. Greg played Darksteel Citadel and Wasted the Volcanic, but wasn’t pleased to see Delver flip on Brainstorm. Robby appeared to lack additional colored sources, however, just playing Wasteland after attacking.
Of course, Greg didn’t need colored sources. He played City of Traitors and then Grim Monolith, tapping out for Lodestone Golem. Robby Wastelanded the City and attacked, but it was a narrow race with Lodestone Golem in the mix, and not one he was favored to win. Greg attacked, played Ancient Tomb, and passed.
Robby is so close to Top 8, with a quick win in game 1.
Robby swung him to 12 and lacked a land, falling to 10 as the Golem attacked him. Greg added Cavern of Souls on Wurm to the board, two mana shy of the Engine and not eager to take 2 damage from Tomb to untap his Monolith. He decided to try and lock down the game now with Trinisphere, and Robby promptly conceded.
Robby 1, Greg 1
Robby started with Ponder and Volcanic Island, while Greg had Wasteland. Robby cast Delver of Secrets and passed the turn, using Daze on Greg’s Grim Monolith and then Brainstorming to setup his Delver of Secrets, revealing Daze. He flipped, Wastelanded Great Furnace, and attacked for 3 damage before casting Top and passing the turn.
Behind on the board and knowing he had to dodge Daze, Greg considered his choices. City of Traitors and Metalworker earned the Daze, and Greg dropped to 14 after Robby replayed the Volcanic Island. Greg played Lightning Greaves, which resolved, and passed. Robby Topped, trying to lock up the game with a fistful of countermagic.
He knocked Greg to 11 and passed two Volcanics available, threatening double Spell Pierce. Greg floated mana with City and played Cavern of Souls for Golem, resolving Lodestone Golem to attack for 5 damage. Robby Topped in the end step, playing Tropical Island on his own turn and Nimble Mongoose—he was two cards from threshold. When Greg tried Mox Opal, Robby Spell Pierced, and Greg allowed it to be countered. A Wasteland activation during his draw step could have prevented that possibility, but maybe it was the same difference.
He resolved Chalice of the Void for 1, and then attacked Robby to 10, hoping Robby couldn’t make it to threshold. He Topped his way into a fetchland, doing the trick, and went to 9 for another Volcanic Island. He Topped, attacked Greg to 2 life, then shipped the turn.
Greg drew, and conceded to lethal on the next turn.
Robby 2, Greg 1
