Round 9: Mark Sun vs. David Bauer
David Bauer in Round 9 of the Legacy Open
The last round of the Swiss treated us with a bunch of win-and-in matches, and this showdown between two regulars was a showcase of two of the best decks Legacy has to offer. Mark was armed with RUG Tempo and David wielded G/W Maverick and the power of winning the die roll.
He had to start with a mulligan and watch as Nimble Mongoose scuttled onto Mark’s side with a free fetchland to protect it. Mark used that fetchland to Spell Snare David’s attempt at Stoneforge Mystic and Delver of Secrets took advantage of it. Knight of the Reliquary with no lands in the yard Mark could get it with Lightning Bolt, but David made the painful play of destroying his own Savannah with his Wasteland to get the knight out of range.
Brainstorm flipped the Delver of Secrets and Mark started getting flying damage in while protecting his position from another Knight of the Reliquary and Gaddock Teeg with Daze and Spell Snare, forcing David to eat another of his lands to dig up Maze of Ith and keep his dwindling life total from falling further into burn range. Spell Pierce burned down David’s Sylvan Library, leaving him stuck on Wasteland, Gaea’s Cradle and Maze of Ith with a large Knight of the Reliquary holding back a thresholded Nimble Mongoose and Insectile Aberration.
Mark was drawing very live, needing just one more bolt to go with the Lightning Bolt in his hand, and David realized that, using the Wasteland on Mark’s upkeep to try to keep from being fried to death. The doomed Volcanic Island did tap to enable the Lightning Bolt on David’s face, dropping him to a scant three, but he was unable to find a second burn spell during his draw step and he had to pass the turn.
David’s Noble Hierarchs allowed him to start attacking with the now very large Knight of the Reliquary, and Mark fell to 1, meaning his fetchlands and Force of Wills were dead. He looked for that crucial bolt to finish David off with a sorcery-speed Brainstorm but whiffed, leaving him locked out of the chance at a topdeck for two more turns. The rampaging knight started acting like The Abyss as it ate Nimble Mongoose then Delver of Secrets then Tarmogoyf, and a Green Sun’s Zenith for Scavenging Ooze nabbed a huge Scavenging Ooze to get David out of burn range and crush any hope Mark had of winning with the bolt he was playing for.
David 1, Mark 0
Mark Sun battles for Top 8 with RUG Delver.
Delver of Secrets and Mother of Runes gave each player their best starts, and Mark went to work with a Ponder to set up a flip. He offered the trade despite having two more spells on top, but he was able to Spell Snare a critical Stoneforge Mystic on the next turn thanks to his fetchland.
Unfazed, Mark fired up a Brainstorm during his upkeep to flip his Delver of Secrets and keep the damage rolling, but a natural Maze of Ith put a stop to the bug. Mark took advantage of David’s ugly manabase of Gaea’s Cradle, Maze of Ith and Savannah by crushing the Mother of Runes with Sulfur Elemental to give him an extra damage source through the maze and turning off the Gaea’s Cradle. He stayed on the mana disruption plan with a Daze on Noble Hierarch before Pondering into a Wasteland for the Maze of Ith.
David 1, Mark 1
It was a slower start for both players as Mark’s second turn Ponder was the first non-land play of the game. Scavenging Ooze got hit by Spell Snare to keep things even, but then David cracked a Wasteland to take down Tropical Island, setting Mark back a bit.
A Brainstorm found him a fetchland to replace the lost green source and enable Tarmogoyf, but an end step Enlightened Tutor for Choke surprised him and forced Mark to burn a Submerge on the Noble Hierarch to keep the devastating enchantment from completely wrecking him. He got rid of the Choke for temporarily with a main-phased Predict after David replayed the Noble Hierarch, forcing Mark to crack a fetchland to protect his potential game-winner for later. Tarmogoyf followed up the cute play to give him his first threat of the game that was immediately trumped by Knight of the Reliquary.
The knight started setting up David up for later with some Horizon Canopy fetches, but Mark found a big-time Submerge to wreck the knight in response to its second activation. The knight went away, but came right back when David peeled a Green Sun’s Zenith and Nimble Mongoose plus Sulfur Elemental were poor answers to the 10/10.
That left Mark with few options, and he decided to alpha strike, losing his Tarmogoyf to bring David down to 8, but Umezawa’s Jitte plus a crack back from the titanic knight meant it was all over and Mark wished David well in the Top 8.
David wins 2-1
