Round 9: Robbie Calhoun vs. Joseph Loster
Joe Loster entered this final round needing a win to sneak into the Top 8 with his Gitaxian+Probe into Delver+of+Secrets, followed by Vapor+Snag on Birds+of+Paradise to slow Joe down. It would have worked if not for the Strangleroot+Geist that jumped straight into the red zone, and suddenly we had a race as Delver+of+Secrets flipped into Insectile+Aberration.
Shuffling a Ponder was an unclear sign from Robbie’s side, but Joe decided to take things easy, opting for Thalia%2C+Guardian+of+Thraben and Birds+of+Paradise over Birthing+Pod or Blade+Splicer on his third turn. The game was quickly coming to a conclusion with each player connecting for a good amount of damage every turn, and doing nothing on turn four was not what Robbie was hoping for.
He nodded, looking longingly at his four untapped lands as Thalia%2C+Guardian+of+Thraben and Strangleroot+Geist smashed into him, and he could do nothing against Huntmaster+of+the+Fells. Then again, maybe there was. Snapcaster+Mage slipped in on Joe’s end step and refueled Vapor+Snag to temporarily disable Thalia and allowed him to get Sword+of+War+and+Peace onto his Insectile+Aberration. Robbie’s team crashed in, knocking Joe to 5 while the Snapcaster+Mage traded with a wolf token.

Joe Loster pilots the popular Naya Pod deep into the Standard Open.
The second game looked to be going well for Joe as he opened on Avacyn’s Pilgrim and Birds+of+Paradise, but Gut+Shot and Snapcaster+Mage put a quick end to both of the mana creatures and suddenly Joe was getting destroyed.
A missed third land drop meant Joe’s hand was stuck and all he could do was watch in horror as Sword+of+War+and+Peace let the Snapcaster+Mage crush for 10 and undo all of the damage the Gut+Shots inflicted. Another airball off the top forced a heartbroken Joe to shake Robbie’s hand and wish him good tiebreaker luck.
