Semifinals: Andrew Boswell vs. Trevor Humphries
This semifinal was an Abzan vs. Jeskai grudge match, as Andrew and Trevor faced off in round nine of the Swiss. Andrew and his Abzan Midrange deck were victorious then, but could he repeat?
It would be a scrappy slugfest in the first game, as both players took multiple mulligans. Andrew kept his five card hand, while Trevor was forced to go to 4. His four-card hand played out reasonable well, however, as he drew his second land immediately to be able to cast Seeker of the Way, and was then able to use an upkeep Magma Jet to find his third land, and all three of his colors. Andrew, for his part, could only play two Forests, shipping his turns back with no play.
Trevor used Jeskai Charm on his next turn to hit Andrew for 4, then attacked again with his Seeker of the Way, dropping Andrew to 10. Andrew triumphantly found his third land, a Caves of Koilos, and added Courser of Kruphix to his board. Trevor was ready with Banishing Light to clear the lane and attacked for another 3 damage.
Andrew: “Sometimes all you need is a two-drop. I’d love a two-drop.”

Trevor kept his seven, but Andrew again was severely punished by the Mulligan faerie, as he went down to just 4 cards before he found a hand with a land. Neither player made a move for the first several turns. Trevor simply played a land and passed on his first five turns, while Andrew stalled at 2 for a while, then found his third land and used Abzan Charm to draw two more cards.
Trevor’s first play of the game was a doozy: a turn 6 Narset, Enlightened Master. Andrew looked to hold it off with Siege Rhino, but Trevor used Banishing Light to get the pachyderm out of the way and come swinging, netting a Stoke the Flames for his troubles. Andrew passed the turn right back, and when Trevor used a Jeskai Charm at end step, Andrew used the window of opportunity to Utter End the Banishing Light, unlocking his Rhino and draining Trevor for another 3.
Trevor shrugged an announced “Let’s spin the wheel!” as he attacked with Narset, Enlightened Master again. He revealed Magma Jet and Stoke the Flames, which was sufficient to clear away Andrew’s Siege Rhino, and the Narset dropped Andrew to 9. Andrew’s next attempt to stabilize, a Sorin, Solemn Visitor, met a Negate, and Trevor was in the clear to cast Sarkan, Dragonspeaker and Stoke the Flames to finish Andrew off.
