Semifinals: Andrew Schneider vs. David McDarby
Andrew's Delver deck sported Goblin+Guides instead of insects in this match.
Two U/R decks faced off in the semifinals, but they could hardly be more different. Andrew’s Delver list packed burn and aggressive creatures in a tempo-oriented shell, while David’s was a combo special with Show+and+Tell alongside Emrakul, wiping permanents off the map with ease.
David dropped to six cards rather quickly, but liked what he saw there, starting with Polluted+Delta. Andrew had Arid+Mesa to find Volcanic+Island, casting Goblin+Guide to begin the beatdown. David broke his fetchland for Volcanic+Island in response, and Brainstormed to set up a land on top of the deck at a minimum, taking 2 damage and revealing Ancient+Tomb.
Playing Lotus Petal, David jammed Sneak+Attack with the Tomb on the next turn—it resolved, and David was on 15 life. An Emrakul, and he’d be golden. Goblin+Guide number two for Andrew gave him another 4 damage, and Chain+Lightning smoked David for 3 more, putting him to 8 with a Brainstorm on top of the deck. Not many choices left here…
Casting Brainstorm, David needed to see an Emrakul in order to kill off his opponent’s board. He fetched Island and cast the draw spell, peeling up three cards—Force+of+Will, Intuition, and a Ponder. Not going to cut it—he was a colored mana shy of making the Intuition matter.
The third Goblin+Guide made it 6 damage, and David threw away a Progenitus in order to block and stick at 3 life. Chain+Lightning required a Misdirection from David, but Lightning+Bolt sealed the deal.

David hoped to convert quickly on his first Legacy Open Top 8.
Leading Scalding Tarn after revealing Leyline+of+Sanctity, David had been forced to mulligan to six for the third game but appeared to have a strong start. Turn 1 Goblin+Guide from Andrew revealed Show+and+Tell, earning a shrug, and David fell to 18. Breaking his fetch for Island, David played Ancient+Tomb and then ran his Show+and+Tell into Daze, now on 15 life.
Goblin+Guide revealed Force+of+Will as David fell to 13 life, and he played Volcanic+Island before passing the turn. Needing a land, he was dismayed to see Intuition revealed on the following turn’s Guide attack—the noose was tightening. David dropped to 9 for Sneak+Attack, each player trading Force+of+Wills but Andrew’s Pyroblast coming out on top. On 8 life, David ended the turn.
In dire shape, he dropped to 6 life as he revealed an Emrakul, and the next Goblin+Guide guaranteed he’d die when it revealed a blank on top of the deck.
