Semifinals: Caleb Williams vs. Peter Tragos
Burn and B/W Midrange square off with a trip to the finals on the line. Will Peter get a shot at his first trophy in his fifth Open Top 8 or will Caleb battle his friend and roommate in the finals?
Caleb is ready for Game 2.
Caleb liked his opener while Peter went down to five cards. Both players started with tapped lands and Peter went for a Thoughtseize on his second turn so Caleb responded by hitting Peter with a Lightning Strike. Peter took Stoke the Flames with the Thoughtseize and passed back. Both players missed their third land until Caleb found Battlefield Forge on the next draw and Peter found Godless Shrine.
Caleb used a Lightning Strike on Peter again, dropping him to 8. Caleb found a Mutavault and hit Peter with a Warleader’s Helix at the end step, knocking him to 8 as Peter played an Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. Peter found a fifth land and played a Blood Baron of Vizkopa, so Caleb responded by hitting Peter with another Helix, untapped and killed Peter with two copies of Shock.

This time Caleb pitched his seven-card hand for a suitable six and Peter kept his opener. Peter made the first play in a Pack Rat on his second turn, but Caleb had the Shock for it and played a Temple of Triumph on his second turn. Peter played Sin Collector to exile a Lightning Strike and Caleb played and attacked with his Chandra’s Phoenix. Peter attacked with the Collector and a Mutavault and passed. Caleb attacked with the Phoenix but Tragos made it pay the Ultimate Price.
Caleb played Chandra, Pyromaster to kill the Collector and get back his Phoenix and passed. Peter attacked with two copies of Mutavault to knock Chandra to 1 and passed. Caleb attacked with the Phoenix and got a land off Chandra’s 0 ability. Peter killed the Planeswalker with his land and passed with three open mana. Caleb attacked in the air again, but Peter killed it with a Hero’s Downfall.
Peter attacked for 2 with a Mutavault and deployed a Nightveil Specter so Caleb used a Warleader’s Helix on Peter at the end step, but forgot his Phoenix trigger. No worry, as he drew and played another Phoenix, leaving it back on defense. Peter played Desecration Demon and kept his Specter back before passing. Caleb used Banishing Light on the Demon and passed after playing a Mutavault of his own. Peter fired off an Ultimate Price on the Phoenix to get in with the Specter and reveal a Boros Charm.
Caleb found another Chandra to hit Peter for 1 and get his two copies of Chandra’s Phoenix from the graveyard. Peter attacked with his lands and Specter so Caleb put the Phoenix in front of a land, took 4, and Peter got another Charm off the reveal. Caleb attacked with his Mutavault and a Phoenix, but Peter had a Bile Blight for the flyer. Peter knocked Caleb to 10 with the Specter to reveal an Eidolon of the Great Revel. Caleb traded off his Mutavault for Peter’s and Peter evened the score at 8 all with a Specter attack, revealing a Sacred Foundry he added to his board.
Caleb fired off a Skullcrack to get his flyers back and played them both and passed. Peter killed one of them with a Hero’s Downfall on the end step, untapped and attacked with the Specter and Caleb chumped with the Phoenix. Caleb drew a Temple and picked up his cards knowing Peter had access to Boros Charms.

Caleb played a Young Pyromancer after both players led with tapped lands and Peter had his two-drop of choice, Pack Rat. Caleb played Chandra’s Phoenix and attacked with both and Peter traded his Rat for the Pyromancer. Peter untapped and slammed a Banishing Light on the Phoenix and shipped the turn back. Caleb had a follow-up Pyromancer and passed. Peter played a Sin Collector so Caleb responded by hitting Peter with a Skullcrack and made a token off the 2/1. Collector whiffed on exiling a card and peter passed without a fourth land.
Caleb played another Phoenix and attacked for 3, leaving the Pyromancer back. Peter traded his Collector the token and Caleb passed. Peter used a Duress to see a Battlefield Forge in Caleb’s grip. Peter used an Ultimate Price on the Pyromancer and passed. Caleb knocked Peter to 9 with his Mutavault and Phoenix and passed. Peter landed a Nightveil Specter to keep Caleb’s creatures at bay then passed after playing a Temple of Silence.
Caleb passed with no action after drawing his card and Peter deployed Pack Rat. Caleb sent his land and Phoenix into the red zone after his draw and Peter traded off as Caleb used a Shock to finish of the Specter. Caleb used a sequence of Boros Charms to get back his Phoenix and Peter extended the hand after the second Charm.
