Semifinals: Christopher O’Bryant vs. Eric Rill
We got ourselves a good, old-fashioned control mirror! Chris brings U/W/R with access to two copies of Counterflux in the sideboard, and Eric Rill brings U/W, his deck of choice for Standard to the table. Which player will get a shot at the trophy?
Eric decides what to do in Game 1.
Chris went down to six cards on the play while Eric kept his opener. Both players played land-go for the first four turns until Eric missed his fourth land drop, forcing him to discard at the end of the turn. Chris stopped hitting land on turn 5, while Eric found another off an Azorius Charm. Chris went for a Sphinx’s Revelation for two at the end of Eric’s turn and it resolved, he found a land and passed after discarding a Firemind’s Foresight.
Eric Revelated for three at Chris’ end step and proceeded to discard Supreme Verdict and Celestial Flare. Chris made the first move to the board when he cast Jace, Architect of Thought, but Eric had the Dissolve. Eric went for his own Jace, the Memory Adept variety, but Chris also had a Dissolve. Chris resolved a Keranos, God of Storms, but Eric used a Detention Sphere on it the next turn. Chris used a Deicide in his upkeep to get the god back, and a Jace dealt three to Eric. Chris resolved his newly found Jace and ticked it up. Eric had another Detention Sphere, this time removing Jace, then used a Banishing Light on the god.
Chris then used a Detention Sphere of his own on the Banishing Light and passed back with his god on the board. Eric found a Jace and got a Dissolve off his minus 2. Chris dealt three off a Banishing Light reveal to kill the opposing Jace then passed. Eric dropped to 13 off the Keranos reveal of Supreme Verdict. Eric Revelated for five and untapped with a fresh grip. Eric found another Jace, this time getting an Elspeth, Sun’s Champion. Chris revealed another Revelation to kill of the Jace and shipped the turn.
Eric resolved his Elspeth and made three tokens before passing. Chris went for a Revelation at the end step, but Eric used a Syncopate to stop it. Keranos flipped a Dissolve and redirected the damage to knock Elspeth down to 2 loyalty. Eric attacked Chris down to 19 then made more tokens. Chris drew again after Keranos flipped a Mutavault then resolved a Detention Sphere to deal with the planeswalker. Eric Revelated at the end of turn for seven and Chris had a Dissolve for it and the Dissolve Eric used to fight over it.
Eric main-phased a Revelation for six, that resolved and attacked for six with his tokens, Chris animated Mutavault and killed one of them and dropped to 14. Keranos flipped another Revelation to Keranos and dropped Eric to 21. Chris attempted to resolve a Banishing Light, but Eric had the Dissolve. Chris ended his turn by cleaning the board with a Supreme Verdict. Eric used this opportunity to land his Elixir of Immortality and immediately shuffled his graveyard back into his library and went up to 26. Eric landed another Elspeth and made some tokens.
Chris revealed a Jace to hit Elspeth for three and played it, but Eric had the Dissolve. Chris went for a Revelation for five, but Eric also had the Negate. Eric landed his own Jace and showed a Revelation in the fact or fiction which was enough for Chris to pick up his cards.

Both went down to six cards and started playing lands. On turn 7, Chris resolved a Brimaz, King of Oreskos, and Eric went for a Revelation for three at end of turn that resolved. Eric landed a Detention Sphere to deal with Brimaz and passed. Chris eventually went for a Revelation at the end of Eric’s turn, but Eric had the Syncopate. Chris untapped and went for a Jace, but Eric had the Gainsay.
Eric tried to land his Elspeth and Chris fired off a Dissolve, Eric fought back with a Negate and made three tokens. Chris hit the planeswalker with a Detention Sphere then landed Keranos. Eric attacked for seven with his lands and tokens then passed with Chris at 13. Keranos flipped a Revelation and Chris killed a token before passing. Eric landed a Jace and Chris went for a Revelation for five in response, but Eric had the Dissolve. Eric ended up getting a Detention Sphere and a Dissolve off the minus 2 and passed.
Keranos flipped a Firemind’s Foresight to kill off Jace and passed. Eric had Detention Sphere for the god and Chris went for a Revelation for five, but Eric had the Dissolve. Chris resolved the Foresight during his main phase and tutored up Dispel, Deicide, and Counterflux. Eric used a Banishing Light on a Detention Sphere to get his Elspeth back and made three more tokens then attacked for six to drop Chris down to 7. Chris used a Banishing Light on a Detention Sphere to get his own Sphere back to get rid of the tokens then used his lands to kill Elspeth.
Eric dropped Chris to 3 with his lands and passed the turn. Chris dropped a land passed back. Chris found a Banishing Light to hit the Detention Sphere on the Keranos and shipped the turn. Keranos flipped a land to let Chris draw again and played a land before passing. Keranos hit a Detention Sphere to deal three to Eric and both players played lands and passed. Chris found an Elspeth off the god and made three tokens with it after playing it.
Eric landed a Jace, Architect of Thought and used the minus 2 to get Detention Sphere and Mutavault, opting to send Aetherling to the bottom of his library. Eric used the Sphere on Elspeth and passed. Keranos hit a land which let Chris draw again then used a Sphere of his own on the Jace. Eric fell to 10 when Keranos flipped a Jace, and Chris dropped Jace and used the minus 2 to get a Sphinx’s Revelation. Keranos flipped an Izzet Charm to knock Eric down to 7 then Chris cashed in Jace to get an Elspeth and a land. Chris slammed Elspeth and made three tokens before passing.
Eric cleared away the tokens with a Supreme Verdict and passed back. Chris made more tokens after getting an extra card off Keranos, while Eric played a land and passed. Chris knocked Eric to 4 off a Dissolve reveal from the god. Chris attacked with the team, Eric animated his three Mutavaults, but Chris had an Izzet Charm to kill one before blocks and Eric scooped up his cards.

Both kept seven and the land drop game started. After seven turns of land go, Eric went for a Revelation at the end of Chris’ turn, but Chris used an Izzet Charm to counter it. Eric untapped and went for a Jace, Memory Adept and Chris fought over it with a Dissolve, Eric used Negate to land the planeswalker and ticked it up. Chris found the other Jace, and got a Dispel off the minus 2.
Eric upped the Jace then used a Detention Sphere on the opposing Jace. Chris had no play and passed the turn. Eric continued upping his Jace and making land drops. Chris went for a Revelation for five at the end step and Eric went for Dissolve, Chris used his Dispel, but Eric had a Dispel of his own. Eric ultimated Jace to draw 20, but in response … Chris conceded.
