Semifinals: David Doberne vs. Christopher Morris-Lent
A tough matchup awaited Christopher in this round—the Dark Maverick list David had prepared could boast some large, fast green creatures to fight off his trusted Merfolk. No Islands here!
David has Mavericked his way into the Top 4.
David led with Savannah and Deathrite Shaman, neutralizing the potential of Christopher’s Wastelands. Instead, Christopher played Island and Aether Vial before passing. David ran Qasali Pridemage into Daze, while Christopher ticked up Vial and replayed his Island.
Knight of the Reliquary on turn 3 earned a Force of Will from Christopher, whose Aether Vial dropped down Silvergill Adept on turn 3. Mutavault paid for another Vial, and Christopher ended the turn. A second Knight for David resolved, creating a big problem for Christopher.
He ticked up both Vials and played a second Island, ending the turn. David fetched, falling to 18 and making his Knight a 4/4 before using Deathrite Shaman to exile Force of Will. Thoughtseize pitched a third Vial from Christopher’s hand as a Merrow Reejerey entered the battlefield via Aether Vial. Green Sun’s Zenith for three followed, putting down Knight of the Reliquary number three.
Playing Wasteland, Christopher passed as Knight began to fetch his way through the deck, growing Knight of the Reliquary and giving him the mana to Deathrite Shaman Christopher down to 14. The Knights were on 6/6 now, and looking very dangerous. An attack with both would mandate blocks due to Deathrite Shaman, but David decided to pass and solidify his advantage.
Lord of Atlantis landed in the end step, and Christopher animated Mutavault prior to entering combat. He attacked with Lord of Atlantis, Adept, and Mutavault... deciding to concede when Christopher blocked.
Christopher's Merfolk aren't so great against Maverick...

A mulligan for Christopher and a keep for David kicked off the second game. Island and pass from Christopher, with Bayou and Green Sun’s Zenith resolving on David’s turn to grab Dryad Arbor. Dismember slew Arbor in the end step, and Christopher stayed ahead on mana after passing turn 2 with no plays. Phyrexian Revoker made it to the battlefield on David’s next turn, naming Jitte.
Phantasmal Image copied the Revoker after Mutavault hit the board, naming Knight of the Reliquary. David shrugged and cast one anyway on turn 3. “I don’t like my chances this game,” Christopher admitted. David confessed he felt pretty confident, and that didn’t change when Christopher played Vial and passed.
Swords to Plowshares removed the Image from the board (but not the game) while David made another Knight of the Reliquary and ended the turn. Another Phantasmal Image copied Revoker once more, but the Knights were already 6/6. David played Horizon Canopy and attacked with both, meriting a chump block. Wasteland on Mutavault grew the Knights, and Christopher’s next draw failed to salvage the game.
