Semifinals: David Winsauer vs. Laurence Moo Young
David defeated local hero Stephen Mann last round, and this round he sets his Storm sights on Laurence and his BUG Delver deck. Laurence won when these two tangled in the Swiss; can David exact his revenge in the top 4?
David's hoping he can avoid being a BUGging!
Laurence had the higher seed and began the game with Delver of Secrets on turn one followed by Ponder turn two to set up his future draws and Delver flips. David used Duress on his second turn to try to dismantle Laurence’s defenses, and in response Laurence hid some of his goodies with Brainstorm. After Brainstorm resolved, Laurence revealed his hand of nothing but creatures. Force of Will off the top then flipped the Delver, and David fell to 16. The Force added some nice backup for Laurence, who also dropped double Deathrite Shaman.
Many Ponders, Preordains, and Gitaxian Probes went by in the first three turns (five total, to be exact). Laurence dropped even more members of his army to put David to the test, adding Tarmogoyf on the next turn. After Gitaxian Probe dropped David to 11, seeing two Force of Will, Delver, and another Deathrite Shaman, David quickly realized he would succumb in the next attack step. The game was not his to win, and Laurence took the first battle.
Laurence 1, David 0.
David decided to mulligan the next game while Laurence, after a moment to consider, decided to keep. Once David found an agreeable six, he spent the first few turns running the cantrip gambit again, and on turn two used Duress to snag one of the two copies of Force of Will from Laurence’s hand. Laurence had Delver of Secrets on turn one and was able to flip the Delver immediately, and with the counterspell back up the pressure was on. But Cabal Therapy a turn later meant that Laurence would be fresh out of Force of Wills, and the shields would be down.
Laurence elected to use Ponder to try to regain some defensive measures, and finding a three he was happy with he kept. He began with Wasteland to remove Underground Sea, falling to 9 in the process, then used Infernal Tutor to search up a second copy of Dark Ritual before passing. David was charging his lasers. Could Laurence get shields up in time?
Laurence is hoping to weather the Storm!
“I lost about six total games today, and four of them were to you.”
Laurence 2, David 0.
