Semifinals: Edward Song vs. Ian Ellis
Edward Song's Dredge deck has made it to the semifinals, but he's not thrilled after seeing Ian's list. Ian, on the other hand, was elated to have made it this far and hoped to play one more match after this one.
Ian's in the zone with his standard assortment of black, green, and white spells.
Edward had the play for the first game and kept, while Ian fell to five cards... and then four. He kept, and Edward began with Lion's Eye Diamond, sacrificing it to Faithless Looting two Grave-Trolls—his dredge hit Cabal Therapy and two Bridge from Belows, plus plenty of dredgers.
Just a Scrubland and Top for Ian, while Edward hit Narcomoeba on the next turn. He used that to Therapy Stoneforge Mystic, missing and seeing Ian's only spell was Swords to Plowshares. Ian drew, played Verdant Catacombs, and passed.
Swords to Plowshares on the next Narcomoeba Edward hit kept him from flashbacking another Therapy as he found a third Bridge, and then Edward made a potentially dangerous play—he attacked. Ian fetched Dryad Arbor and blocked, removing three Bridges from the game in the process!
Now with some space, Ian Topped on the upkeep. He played Forest and then Mox Diamond, discarding Maze of Ith. He had no hand, but he did have three mana. Edward dredged, still searching for Ichorids, and finding one. He attacked Ian, losing one Zombie to the block.
And then Ian untapped with Knight. He Green Sun's Zenithed for Scavenging Ooze and passed the turn, using his Knight to Bojuka Bog once Edward brought back an Ichorid and attacked. Thoughtseize on the next turn stole the Breakthrough Edward had drawn, and now Ian had the game locked up.
Losing to two mull to fours in one tournament had Edward shaking his head in disbelief.
And thus Edward lost his second game of the day to a mulligan to four.
Ian 1, Edward 0
Ian went to six cards while Edward kept his starting hand for the second game. Cephalid Coliseum on turn 1 for Edward, and Careful Study put Bridge and Golgari Grave-Troll in the bin. Ian turn 1'd Stoneforge Mystic via Mox Diamond, grabbing Umezawa's Jitte and following with Surgical Extraction on Grave-Troll—Edward had no other dredgers!
City of Brass for Edward, and he took 2 more damage to play Breakthrough for one. Pitching Bridge, Ichorid, and two Narcomoebas... things were looking grim already. Ian drew and passed the turn, while Edward had nothing to do but draw a card, sighing as Batterskull hit the board—natural draws!
