Semifinals: Gregg Spano vs. Jessy Hefner
After starting the Invitational 1-3, no one has been able to defeat Jessy Hefner. Could Jessy continue his Cinderella story by moving into the finals with his RUG Delver list or would Gregg Spano and his Mud deck move one step closer to becoming the Invitational champion?
Gregg opted for the play as the higher seed and shipped his opener back immediately. Jessy kept his seven, while Gregg pitched his six-card hand as well. Gregg kept his five and started things off with a Wasteland. Jessy used a Wasteland to destroy Gregg’s, then Gregg found a City of Traitors before passing.
Jessy played a Delver of Secrets off a Volcanic Island and passed. Gregg went for a Lodestone Golem after sacrificing a City for another one, but Jessy had the Force of Will, pitching Spell Snare. Jessy’s Delver transformed and attacked for three, then he used another Wasteland on the second City of Traitors. Gregg played a Cloudpost and passed as Jessy fetched at end of turn.
Jessy attacked again and played a Scalding Tarn. Greg didn’t find another land and passed. Jessy sent in the 3/2 and shipped it back. Greg missed on land again and passed so Jessy used Fire at the end of the turn and Gregg had seen enough.

Gregg goes for a Trinisphere.
Gregg’s deck didn’t agree with him again as he went down to six, while Jessy was happy with his seven. Gregg found a suitable six and led off with a Cloudpost and Jessy started with a Scalding Tarn. Gregg went for a Metalworker after adding a City of Traitors to his mana base, but Jessy Brainstormed in response, then returned his Tropical Island to Daze the creature.
Jessy fetched up another Tropical Island and cast Ponder. Gregg went for a Trinisphere, but Jessy had the Force of Will, pitching Ponder. Gregg played a Wasteland and passed. Jessy found a Wasteland of his own to blow up the Ancient Tomb, then deployed a Delver of Secrets. Gregg passed with no play. Jessy transformed his Delver with a Chain Lightning, then attacked for three and dropped a Tarmogoyf.
Gregg drew and passed with no play. Jessy attacked for eight then played another land and passed. Gregg drew and found no answers and went to his sideboard.

Gregg was on the play for a third time and was hoping for a strong seven this time, however, the cards did not agree with him as he sent his hand back. Jessy said he’d try his opener as Gregg shuffled up again. Gregg threw away his six and shook his head. The result was the same with his five. Gregg settled with his four-card hand and led with a Cloudpost. Jessy fetched up a Volcanic Island and played Delver of Secrets.
Gregg hoped to land a Chalice of the Void on one, but Jessy had the Daze. Jessy flipped his Delver with a Force and sent in the 3/2 flyer, then Pondered and shuffled his deck before drawing. Gregg went for a Kuldotha Forgemaster, but Jessy used his known Force of Will, pitching Daze. Jessy attacked again and passed. Gregg had all the mana he needed with his double Cloudpost, Vesuava mana base and landed a Karn Liberated that rolled up, exiling Force of Will. Jessy used a Lightning Bolt on Gregg at the end of the turn, untapped and attacked Gregg down to 8. Karn moved down and exiled the Insectile Aberration, then Gregg resolved a Metalworker. Jessy had another end-of-turn Bolt to drop Gregg to 5.

Jessy would finally be on the play this time and kept his seven-card hand, while Gregg continued his pattern of throwing back his opener. Gregg liked his six and Jessy started things off with a Nimble Mongoose off a Tropical Island. Gregg used his turn to destroy the Tropical Island with a Wasteland. Jessy fetched up a Volcanic Island and played a Ponder and attacked for one. Gregg resolved a Chalice of the Void on one and passed.
Jessy used a Wasteland to destroy the City of Traitors then attacked for one. Gregg used a Glimmerpost to recoup the life and passed back. Jessy attacked for one and added a Tropical Island to his board. Gregg gained two off his second Glimmerpost in the form of a Vesuva, but lost two life when Jessy used an end-of-turn Destructive Revelry on the Chalice. Jessy untapped and used a Brainstorm, then blew up a Glimmerpost with a Wasteland before attacking for one more.
Gregg went for a Trinisphere, but Jessy had the Spell Pierce. Jessy attacked Gregg down to 9 with the now threshold-enabled Mongoose and added a third land to his board before passing. Gregg found an Ancient Tomb, but had no play. Jessy fetched at end of turn for a Volcanic Island, untapped, attacked for three, then sent a Chain Lightning and a Lightning Bolt at Gregg for the win.
