Semifinals: Jeff Folinus vs. Gerard Fabiano
Jeff is one of two U/R Twin players left in the Top 4. In his way is Gerard and his creative Sultai Control deck. Which player would play for the trophy in the finals?
Jeff made the first move with a second-turn Gitaxian Probe and played his second Sulfur Falls as Gerard fetched up an Overgrown Tomb. Both players made lands drops with Gerard adding Darkslick Shores and Verdant Catacombs to his board, while Jeff went with an Island and an end of turn Deceiver Exarch that met a Mana Leak. Jeff untapped and used a Snapcaster Mage to get another use out of Gitaxian Probe and passed after playing a Tectonic Edge as Gerard fetched a Breeding Pool.
Gerard played an Island and fired off an Inquisition of Kozilek, taking a Spell Snare, and shipped the turn. Jeff knocked Gerard to 16 with his 2/1 and passed back. Gerard made his fifth land drop and played Serum Visions, sending one card to the bottom and keeping one on top, before passing, leading Jeff to flash in a Vendilion Clique at the end step. Gerard responded by going to 15 by fetching an Island and used a Snapcaster Mage to get a Mana Leak to counter the 3/1.
Jeff killed the Mage with a Lightning Bolt and served in with his 2/1 again and passed, leading Gerard to play another fetch land and pass as well. Jeff hit Gerard to 11 with Snapcaster Mage and shipped back and Gerard went to 10 to search up another Island. Gerard untapped and fetched a Forest to play Thragtusk and Mana Leaked the Cryptic Command Jeff attempted to stop it with. Jeff used another Snapcaster to get his Bolt back to kill the first half of the Thragtusk and passed after adding a Grim Lavamancer to his board.
Gerard cleared the Snapcasters with a Maelstrom Pulse and got in for three with his Beast. Jeff passed with no play and Gerard killed the Lavamancer with an Abrupt Decay to get in with his Beast again. Jeff hit Gerard with the Lavamancer before it died and passed his next turn with no other play. Gerard played a Tarmogoyf and passed the turn. Jeff attempted to stop the beats on the next turn with a Deceiver Exarch tapping the Beast, but still took a hit from the Tarmogoyf. Gerard found another Abrupt Decay and cleared the road at Jeff’s end step to attack for the win on the next combat step.

Jeff kicked off Game 2 with a Serum Visions after fetching an Island while Gerard went to 16 after fetching a Swamp and using a Thoughtseize to take a Deceiver Exarch, leaving Jeff with two more lands, two Serum Visions, and a Remand. Jeff dropped a Misty Rainforest and passed back, cracking it when Gerard attempted Tarmogoyf, so he could Remand it. Jeff fired off Visions No. 2 and 3 along with an Island before shipping the turn. Gerard used another Thoughtseize to take a Cryptic Command and went to 14 to fetch an Island and resolve his Tarmogoyf.
Jeff went to 15 to fetch an Island and resolved Blood Moon, even though Gerard had three basic lands in play. Gerard attacked with his Tarmogoyf and landed a three-mana Tasigur, the Golden Fang. Needing help, Jeff used a Snapcaster Mage to flashback a Serum Visions and passed after playing a Grim Lavamancer off a Desolate Lighthouse Mountain. Gerard played his Snapcaster Mage and got another use out of Thoughtseize to take one of two Snapcasters Jeff had in hand and served in with his team. Jeff offered no blocks and fell to 3.
Jeff added his other Mage to his board and played more Serum Visions and shipped the turn. Gerard drew and bashed with his team, leading Jeff to chump the big creatures with his Mages and went to 1, using Lavamancer to eat his sorceries and kill off the Tarmogoyf. Jeff played another Lavamancer and passed and Gerard shoved in, prompting Jeff to kill off the Mage with a Lavamancer while chumping the Tasigur.
Jeff played an Island and stopped Gerard in his upkeep to direct a Lightning Bolt at the Tasigur then used the Lavamancer to finish it off, letting Gerard activate the legend, getting an Abrupt Decay from the graveyard. Gerard passed back and Jeff did the same. When Gerard pass again after playing a land, Jeff hit Gerard down to 10 with the Lavamancer. After Jeff passed on his next turn, Gerard destroyed the Blood Moon with an Abrupt Decay and went to 9 to fetch a tapped Breeding Pool. Gerard passed again and Jeff decided to activate his Lighthouse and Gerard responded with a Snapcaster Mage, letting him kill the Lavamancer with the Decay.
Jeff considered his options before passing the turn. Gerard attacked with his Mage and Jeff went for his own Snapcaster but Gerard used a Mana Leak that met a Dispel so Gerard used another Mana Leak that Jeff had an answer for so Gerard responded with a Decay to kill the Mage before blocks to take the match.
