Semifinals: Josh Cicio vs. Levi Teitz
Levi Teitz sat down with UWR Delver for this semifinal, while Josh Cicio brought the relentless Shardless BUG to battle. Who would earn a seat in the finals?
Levi reveals a hand full of land.
Levi had Island and Ponder to kick things off, while Josh was content to develop his manabase, with only Verdant Catacombs and Wasteland on his first two turns. On Levi’s second turn, he fetched up a Plains with Flooded Strand and cast Stoneforge Mystic. Josh said no, Pitching Force of Will to cast Force of Will. He untapped, played his second Wasteland, and passed again. Levi had no play either, only a Scalding Tarn, and Josh found a second colored source on his next turn to cast a Shardless Agent, cascading into Sylvan Library. Levi used two Dazes to keep the enchantment out of play, but the 2/2 beater stuck.
Looking to keep Josh color-screwed, Levi used Wasteland to destroy Tropical Island. Josh drew and played a Swamp, but couldn’t actually cast either of the cards in his hand. Levi Pondered and found another Wasteland, using it to destroy Josh’s Underground Sea, stranding him even further. He followed up with Stoneforge Mystic, which retrieved Umezawa’s Jitte. Josh again had no play, and Levi simply drew his card and passed, threatening to activate his Stoneforge on Josh’s end step.
An Underground Sea arrived for Josh, allowing him to cast Liliana of the Veil. He ticked it down, and Levi responded by sneaking in a Batterskull. The Stoneforge Mystic hit the bin. Levi untapped, cracked all of his fetchlands, and used the mana to cast and equip Umezawa’s Jitte to his Germ and to send the Shardless Agent farming with a Swords to Plowshares. The Germ attacked Liliana down. Josh Wastelanded away Levi’s fetched up dual lands, but could only suspend Ancestral Visions, a slow response against the looming Batterskull threat.
After another Batterskull swing, Levi added Delver of Secrets to the board, hoping to close out the game quickly. A basic Forest finally arrived for Josh, who eagerly cast Shardless Agent and cascaded into Deathrite Shaman. Levi’s Delver wasted no time sprouting wings, as Lightning Bolt appeared on top of his deck. He then equipped the Jitte to it and attacked with both of his creatures. The Shardless Agent jumped in front of the Germ, and Levi used the Jitte to dispose of Deathrite Shaman.
Josh took a peak at his top card, found no help, and moved on to game 2.

Josh is pleased with his vanilla 1/2 creature.
Josh got things started in game 2 with a turn 1 Deathrite Shaman, but Levi had the answer immediately, casting Pithing Needle on his first turn to shut it off. Josh was content to attack for 1 on his second turn and pass. Levi added a Delver of Secrets to the board, and Josh had Abrupt Decay at his end step to dispose of the Needle and turn his Deathrite Shaman back on. He untapped and cast Shardless Agent, spinning up a Thoughtseize. Levi had a Brainstorm in response to tuck his gas away, then revealed a hand of nothing but five land.
The first card off the top was revealed to be a Red Elemental Blast, and Insectile Aberration came out to play, attacking Josh down to 13. Josh had an Abrupt Decay for the flier, but Levi used a pair of Wastelands to knock out both of Josh’s land, leaving him with just a Deathrite Shaman for mana. The Shardless Agent continued to peck away at Levi, dropping him to 16, then 14, then 12, as Levi countered Josh’s attempts to make headway with Daze and Spell Pierce.
Delver of Secrets showed up for Levi, and a Lightning Bolt appeared on top right behind it to flip up Insectile Aberration. He attacked for 3 more and then Lightning Bolted the Deathrite Shaman. Josh found a timely land, a Marsh Flats, and passed after attacking with his Shardless Agent again.
The Insectile Aberration dropped Josh to 6, and Levi had Red Elemental Blast at the ready when Josh’s Ancestral Visions finally came out of suspension. Josh found a second land and cast Sylvan Library. The flier smacked him again, and now Josh took three looks with his Sylvan Library, didn’t find any help, and conceded.
