Semifinals: Kenny Dungar vs. Kyle Olson
The cavalcade of weird decks continues here in the semifinals of SCG Minneapolis, with Kyle Olson’s Junk taking on Kenny’s Goblin horde. After surviving multiple Pernicious Deeds last round, can Kenny continue his winning ways and defeat Kyle’s Stoneforge Mystic and Knight of the Reliquary-powered midrange?
Kenny, on the mulligan to six, led things off with Bloodstained Mire into Mountain and Goblin Lackey. Kyle answered with Marsh Flats fetching Swamp and casting Thoughtseize. Kenny revealed Goblin Matron and three lands, and the discard spell took the Matron. Kenny attacked with Lackey and put his freshly drawn Goblin Ringleader into play, which revealed Krenko, Mob Boss, Gempalm Incinerator, and Goblin Matron.
“That’s pretty brutal.”
“Yeah, I’m really good at this game.”
Kyle cast Stoneforge Mystic, searching for Umezawa’s Jitte, off of Scrubland. Incinerator took out the Kor Artificer before the end of the turn, and Kenny untapped and swung for three. Lackey dropped a Krenko, Mob Boss and three Mountains allowed Goblin Matron to enter play, searching Goblin Warchief. Kyle dropped Bojuka Bog and cast another Stoneforge Mystic, fetching up a Batterskull. Perhaps a bit late, as Warchief entered play along with Goblin Piledriver. Krenko brought a half dozen 1/1 Goblins into play, and the Mystic had to chump the 23/2 Piledriver. After attacks Kyle dropped to a measly one life, but Goblin Sharpshooter with haste took care of the final point.
Kenny Dungar is excited to be here!
Kenny 1, Kyle 0.
Kyle led with Green Sun’s Zenith for zero, finding Dryad Arbor. Kenny Wastelanded Bayou with his first turn. Kyle fetched up a Scrubland with Marsh Flats on turn two and cast Stoneforge Mystic, which in turn identified Umezawa’s Jitte as its target of choice. Kenny cast Pyrokinesis by removing Goblin Matron, taking out Kyle’s pair of creatures. Dark Confidant was Kyle’s next play, now safe from the Alliances pitch spell. Kenny’s third turn saw him play a Cavern of Souls naming Human and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.
Bojuka Bog was revealed to the Bob and Kyle used Verdant Catacombs to find Bayou and cast Knight of the Reliquary, currently sitting at a healthy 7/7. Relic of Progenitus from Kenny was not joined by any Goblins, and he quickly passed. Bob this time revealed another Knight of the Reliquary, which also joined in the fun for Kyle. Kyle attacked with Knight, and Kenny blocked with Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. After first strike damage resolved, he cracked the Relic and the Knight died without being able to Wasteland in response. The second Knight grew to a 3/3 after Wasteland took out the Cavern, and Kyle passed.
Kenny had a trio of Mountains and a Thalia, an odd selection to be sure, and the 2/1 was joined by Stingscourger which returned the Knight ot Kyle’s hand. Thalia attacked for two before the end of the turn. Kyle recast his Knight on his turn and passed. Ringleader showed a pair of Goblin Matrons for Kenny, but nothing else and he was forced to pass the turn. Dark Confidant got Swords to Plowshares, and Umezawa’s Jitte finally came down for Kyle. The Jitte was picked up by Knight of the Reliquary (now a 4/4 thanks to Marsh Flats) and Kenny double blocked to trade (but to add counters to the equipment). Matron came down for Kenny, which searched for Goblin Piledriver. The Onslaught rare also entered play, and Kenny passed, tapped out.
Dark Confidant kept doing work, drawing a land. Dark Confidant picked up the Jitte, and after no blocks were declared it became a 4/3. Pernicious Deed entered play for Kyle as well, and he passed the turn with many options. Wasteland took down Bayou on Kenny’s next turn, and he attacked with Piledriver and Matron. Kyle pondered his next play for a moment, deciding whether it was worth it to take the four damage or not, before ultimately deciding that he would take the four and drop to 6. Tuktuk Scrapper entered the battlefield and took out the Jitte after Kyle gained some life (and he took a damage from the Ally). Kyle’s life total stood at 10, while Kenny was at 16.
Mox Diamond was the next reveal for Bob, and he cast Sensei’s Divining Top before passing. Three Goblins rumbled into the red zone for Kenny, and after a Swords to Plowshares took down the Scrapper, the Dark Confidant traded with Goblin Piledriver. A post combat Goblin Matron found Goblin Ringleader. Maze of Ith seemed to turn the tide in Kyle’s direction, and Wasteland took out one of Kenny’s Cavern of Souls naming Goblin and Vindicate took out the other. Kenny found a Rishidan Port on top of his library to cast Goblin Ringleader and he drew a pair of Gempalm Incinerators off of the 2/2 haste. Maze prevented Ringleader damage and he took two from a pair of Matrons, dropping Kyle to seven. He used Top to examine the top of his library before untapping for his turn.
Karakas entered play on Kyle’s side, and he simply passed the turn. Rishidan Port tapped Maze of Ith precombat, and Kenny attacked with a small team. Kyle activated Top and drew with it, then activated Deed to clear the board. AEther Vial came down as the board’s only nonland permanent and Kenny passed. Vindicate took Rishidan Port out of commission, and that was the extent of Kyle’s turn. Kenny untapped with four lands and four cards in hand, and he decided to cast Gempalm Incinerator as a paltry 2/1. When you just need a body, you just need a body.
Kyle Olson is ready for top four action!
Pithing Needle for Kyle named Gempalm Incinerator, which will prevent the cycling ability but not the regular ol’ 2/1 from attacking. Relic of Progenitus once again emptied all graveyards, and Gempalm Incinerator dealt two damage. Stoneforge Mystic off the top for Kyle found Batterskull and another Vindicate killed off the Gempalm Incinerator. Kenny untapped and cast Krenko, Mob Boss… but on Kyle’s next turn it decided to take up farming with Swords to Plowshares. Maybe he will be the Farm Boss now…
AEther Vial had slowly ticked up to four counters, but hadn’t dropped any guys into play. Another vanilla 2/1 for three for Kenny was answered by Batterskull getting Vialed in by Stoneforge Mystic. Kyle swung the game wildly in his favor by attacking with Batterskull, setting life totals at 11 for Kyle and 15 for Kenny. Stingscourger attempted to step the bleeding by bouncing the Germ, and in response to its return to hand ability an Incinerator killed Stoneforge Mystic. Batterskull got hard-cast next turn, after the 2/1 dealt a couple of damage, and Kenny allowed Stingscourger to die to its echo cost before Goblin Warchief entered the battlefield. It did not attack into the 4/4 vigilance lifelinker though (surprise, surprise), and Kenny ended his turn. The Germ marched into Kenny, setting Kenny to 9 (Kyle at 13 now), and Knight of the Reliquary (3/3 currently) joined the squad. Path to Exile targeted Goblin Warchief before the end of the turn, and it joined Krenko on the sidelines.
Six mana for a hard-cast Pyrokinesis (never thought I’d see that) dealt with the Knight of the Reliquary, but it didn’t seem to matter. Batterskull continued its trek to victory and another Knight came into play. But another hardcast Pyrokinesis killed that Knight as well. The Batterskull got chumped by a Gempalm Incinerator and Green Sun zenith for 2 found…
“Failed to find.”
Not terribly awkward as it turns, and a blank draw allowed Kyle to take game two.
Kenny 1, Kyle 1.
Kenny led with AEther Vial, and Kyle cast Thoughtseize. Kenny’s hand consisted of Pyrokinesis, Relic of Progenitus, Bloodstained Mire, and Goblin Ringleader. The Ringleader was the target of choice, and he passed. Kenny cast the Relic and ticked up his Vial, but had no tiny creature to play. Dark Confidant was cast off of Plains and Swamp. Kenny activated the Relic at end of turn in an attempt to dig into action. He untapped and played Port, which tapped Plains on Kenny’s turn. Pithing Needle named AEther Vial for Kyle on turn three.
Goblin Piledriver was Kenny’s first play with power and toughness, and Incinerator took out the Dark Confidant on Kyle’s upkeep. Thoughtseize took out Pyrokinesis and dropped Kyle to 14, leaving Kenny with but a Port in hand. Piledriver stumbled in for one damage, and Skirk Prospector joined Kenny’s team. At this point, the judge noticed that the Bob trigger was missed and put the Dark Confidant trigger on the stack. Kyle received a missed trigger warning and revealed Wasteland, after which he cast Swords to Plowshares on the Piledriver.
A pair of Ports tapped both of Kyle’s white sources, and another Pithing Needle came into play and named those same Rishidan Ports. Kenny drew a Wasteland at took out a Scrubland, and Prospector pecked a damage at Kyle. Kyle went to 10 off of a fetchland activation, and he untapped and cast Batterskull. Stingscourger bounced the token for Kenny, and another damage from the Skirk Prospector took Kyle to 9. Tick tock!
Dark Confidant and Umezawa’s Jitte came down for Kyle and he passed. Kenny paid the echo for Stingscourger and passed without an attack. Mox Diamond was revealed and cast for Kyle, who then also cast Knight of the Reliquary. Dark Confidant grabbed Umezawa’s Jitte, which was blocked by Stingscourger and before damage was sacrificed to the Prospector’s ability.
Ringleader off the top found Goblin Piledriver and Goblin Matron, and a Goblin Lackey also joined the fray. Kyle revealed Maze of Ith to Bob, and he cast and activated Top. He then drew a card off of said Top, which found Swords to Plowshares to take care of the troublesome Skirk Prospector. Knight of the Reliquary, now a 6/6, attacked alongside Dark Confidant, and the Ringleader trade with the Dark Confidant. Maze of Ith untapped the Knight inside of combat but after damage (a strange glitch in the rules, if you ask me) and Kenny went to 13. Goblin Matron found Tuktuk Scrapper, and Goblin Lackey died to an Umezawa’s Jitte counter.
A 7/7 Knight with a Jitte dropped Kenny to 6, and the Maze of Ith trick once again untapped the Knight. Stingscourger bounced the Knight to Kyle’s hand, and Goblin Piledriver also joined Kenny’s team. Unphased, Kyle calmly replayed the Knight and passed back to Kenny. He decided not to pay Stingscourger’s echo and cast Tuktuk Scrapper to take out Jitte. Knight of the Reliquary was just too big though, and Kenny extended his hand in congratulations.
Kyle 2, Kenny 1.
