Semifinals: Kent Ketter vs. Jamie Kelly
Both players have utilized the power of Dragons to the reach the semifinals. Who will continue their dominance in the skies: Jamie and the Mardu clan, or Kent and all the dragons!
Kent, as the third seed, has chosen to play first. Both players keep their opening hands, and our battle for the skies begins!
Llanowar Wastes from Kent is met by Temple of Silence and a keep on top by Jamie. After fetching a Forest with his Windswept Heath, Kent deploys a Sylvan Caryatid, looking to ramp into his Dragons early. Jamie just has a Mountain and a pass of the turn.
Kent starts off his third turn with a Thoughtseize, taking Jamie's only threat in Goblin Rabblemaster. A Satyr Wayfinder nets him a Temple of Malady, and he leaves it on top, followed by a pass. Jamie only has a tapped Nomad Outpost for his turn and a pass.
An attack for one with the Satyr Wayfinder is the first thing Kent does for his turn, but not the last. A casting of Dragonlord Ojutai and a pass back to Jamie, Kent already threatening to do some serious damage early! Once again, Jamie has a land drop, followed by a pass.
Kent seems worried about his Ojutai dying, so he leaves it back, just attacking with a Satyr Wayfinder. An attempt to pass his turn by Kent leads into a Crackling Doom, killing the Ojutai. Just a Seeker of the Way from Jamie, and a pass. And it is a very dead Seeker of the Way, as Kent casts a Dragonlord Atarka, targeting the Seeker. But the Dragonlord dies before it can attack, thanks to a Murderous Cut.
Jamie starts deploying dragons of his own, with a Stormbreath Dragon. It attacks Kent, and Jamie passes. However, Kent takes the Stormbreath Dragon with a Dragonlord Silumgar. Jamie passes the turn with all of his mana up, but on Kent's upkeep, casts two Draconic Roars on the Silumgar, killing it, getting back his Stormbreath Dragon, and dealing six damage to Kent in the process! Kent plays a face-down Morph creature and passes the turn.
Jamie tries to go for the kill by Dashing in a Kohlaghan, Storm's Fury, but Kent has a Murderous Cut for the red-black dragon. So just another attack with a Stormbreath Dragon and pass by Jamie. At the end of Jamie's turn, Kent gets back a Dragonlord Atarka with his Haven of the Spirit Dragon, which he casts on his turn, killing the Stormbreath Dragon.
Jamie wins Game 1, and leads the match, 1-0!
After sideboards, Kent will once again go first with both players keeping their opening sevens.
Kent starts with a Temple of Malady, placing the card on top to draw next turn. Jamie has an uncracked Bloodstained Mire and a pass. Kent plays a Llanowar Wastes, getting a land for his troubles, and passes back to Jamie.
Jamie fetches for a Mountain and plays a Plains, followed by a Seeker of the Way. For his turn, Kent plays a second Satyr Wayfinder, finding a Sandsteppe Citadel. He then takes a pain from his Llanowar Wastes to cast Thoughtseize, taking Jamie's Stormbreath Dragon. With that, he passes his turn.
An attack by the Seeker of the Way, a block by a Satyr Wayfinder, and a land drop is all Jamie has for his turn. A third Satyr Wayfinder by Kent, finding a Haven of the Spirit Dragon, followed by a scry from his Temple of Deceit, keeping on top. Kent seems to be setting up for big turns here soon.
A Thoughtseize from Jamie reveals Kent's hand: two Dragonlord Dromokas, a Foul-Tongue Invocation, a Sandsteppe Citadel, and a Haven of the Spirit Dragon. Jamie takes the Foul-Tongue Invocation, attacks with the Seeker of the Way, and passes back to Kent. Kent attacks with his now lone Satyr Wayfinder, and plays the Sandsteppe Citadel, and passes back to Jamie.
Jamie casts Draconic Roar, revealing Thunderbreak Regent, to kill off Kent's final Wayfinder, and swings in with the Seeker of the Way. However, Kent starts dropping dragons, with his first Dragonlord Dromoka, and passes his turn back.
This is followed by Jamie trying his best to stop the Dromoka, and Kent having the answers each time. Stormbreath Dragon? Murderous Cut. Thunderbreak Regent? Second Murderous Cut. Second Thunderbreak Regent? Hero's Downfall. Each time, Kent would kill one of Jamie's dragons, followed by gaining life with his Dromoka. One last Thunderbreak Regent by Jamie met another Hero's Downfall by Kent, and we are on our way to the deciding game!
Kent wins Game 2, and ties the match at 1-1!
For the first time in the match, Jamie will be on the play. Both players keep their opening seven, and we have a deciding game to get to the finals!
Both players start with scrylands, and bottoming their first cards. Jamie, however, has a Turn 2 Soulfire Grand Master, while Kent only has a land and a pass of the turn. Jamie tries a Turn 3 Goblin Rabblemaster, but Kent has the it pay the Ultimate Price before it can bring along its cohorts. An attack by the Grand Master and a pass from Jamie.
Kent casts Thoughtseize, taking the Crackling Doom away from Jamie, followed by casting a Sylvan Caryatid. Jamie only has an attack by the Soulfire Grand Master, but a block by Kent's Caryatid means it just gains two life. A second Sylvan Caryatid by Kent and a pass back to Jamie, who decides to Read the Bones. He keeps both the cards on top, and passes back to Kent.
Kent keeps playing lands, and passing, daring Jamie to do something. Jamie does do something, by playing a Thunderbreak Regent. But that's all and a pass to Kent, who once again, has a simple land plus go. An attack by Thunderbreak Regent by Jamie is met, finally, by a Murderous Cut. Once again, Kent has a land and a pass of the turn.
Jamie tries to seize the initiative by playing a Stormbreath Dragon. It resolves and attacks Kent for four damage. Kent casts a Satyr Wayfinder in hopes of finding any action, but no Dragons off the mill leaves him seemingly dead in the water. Or, the air, in this case.
Jamie wins Game 3, and the match, 2-1! Jamie is on the way to the finals!
