Semifinals: Kyle Boggemes vs. Brad Fallen
Brad Fallen has made the semifinals in his first ever StarCityGames.Com Open. Can he beat the Veteran Brawler in Kyle Boggemes? Or will Kyle’s experience help him defeat his opponent’s onslaught of red Dragons?
Kyle, as the second seed, chooses to play and keeps his opening grip. His opponent, Brad, mulligans to six cards. Kyle leads with a Turn 1 Temple of Malady, scrys to the top and passes the turn. Brad also has a scryland in Temple of Abandon, keeps his on top passes the turn back.
Kyle has the first creature of the match with a Fleecemane Lion, while Brad matches him with a Sylvan Caryatid. Kyle plays another Temple of Malady, and smashes in with his Fleecemane Lion, and plays a Warden of the First Tree. For Brad’s turn, he casts a Turn 3 Thunderbreak Regent and passes the turn.
Kyle thinks for a bit, but decides to Valorous Stance the Dragon, taking three damage in the process and swing with his team. Brad plays a land for his turn and brings the Haste beatings in with Stormbreath Dragon. Kyle takes the damage, and for his turn, attacks for four once again, and passes with all his mana up, but has no additional land drop.
Smelling something is up, Brad swings with the Stormbreath Dragon, which meets an immediate Hero’s Downfall. Brad plays both a Courser of Kruphix and another Sylvan Caryatid for his turn and passes back to Kyle. Kyle deploys Anafenza, the Foremost to his team, but has to pass back in the face of all the blockers Brad has.
Brad plays an Elvish Mystic and a Xenagos, the Reveler, making a 2/2 Satyr token for his turn, and building quite the board presence. After drawing for his turn, Kyle attacks Brad with his Anafenza and Fleecemane Lion. Brad double blocks the Anafenza with his Courser and Satyr token, and chump blocks the now 4/4 Lion (due to Anafenza’s ability) with his Elvish Mystic. Kyle casats Abzan Charm, making his Anafenza, the Foremost a 6/6, killing off most of Brad’s board. With that, Kyle passes the turn, still stuck on three lands, but making some headway.
Brad plays a Morph creature and quickly unmorphs it as a Den Protector, getting back his Stormbreath Dragon. After using Xenagos’ +1 ability, and tapping his Sylvan Caryatid’s, he recasts the Dragon, but leaves it back on defense. He passes the turn back to Kyle. Kyle tanks to start his turn, but then turns all three of his creatures sideways, giving the Lion a second +1/+1 counter. Brad blocks the huge Anafenza, the Foremost with his protection from white Stormbreath Dragon, and takes enough damage to go to three.
However, on Brad’s turn, he activates the Monstrous ability on Stormbreath Dragon, and swings with the now 7/7 Dragon. This amount of damage is enough to finish Kyle off.
Brad wins Game 1, and is up 1-0!
“…Here come the Ultimate Prices,” says Brad with a bit of a sigh.
Since the players are aware of each other’s decklists, Brad knows that Kyle has some more cards in store for his deck after sideboard. And Kyle is also on the play this time as well, but this time he is the one to mulligan, down to five cards. Brad keeps his opening seven, and we are under way for Game 2!
Kyle leads with a Temple of Malady and scrys to the top. Brad has a Forest and an Elvish Mystic, hoping to accelerate out some Dragons. Kyle plays another land and passes the turn. Brad plays a Sylvan Caryatid and attacks for one with his Elf. Kyle once again plays a land and passes, and this time Brad has a Hornet Nest and another attack for one.
Kyle seems to be flooding out, playing another land and passing. Brad tries to Roast his own Hornet Nest to make many Insect tokens, but Kyle Utimate Prices it in response. A second Elvish Mystic is played, and another attack for one.
Kyle finally has a play to the board, with an un-Raided Wingmate Rock. But this dies quickly to a Crater’s Claws from Brad, and more Elven beats commence. Kyle once again plays a land and passes the turn. Brad has a Morph creature on his turn, and the Elvish Mystic duo continues to take life points away from Kyle.
Kyle plays his own Morph token and passes the turn. Brad has no plays for his turn except for a scry off a Temple of Abandon. Kyle simply draws a card and attacks with his Morph, which Brad attempts to block with his own Morph token. Before damage, Kyle casts Valorous Stance to make his morph indestructible, but Brad counters by attempting a Draconic Roar, revealing a Thunderbreak Regent. But Kyle responds with a second Valorous Stance! This leads Brad with a dead Morph creature, and Kyle still in the game. For his turn, Brad casts the revealed Thunderbreak Regent, and simply passes back.
Kyle starts things off with an attack by his Morph creature, and Brad decides not to block, not wanting to lose his Dragon. Kyle unmorphs a Den Protector, getting back his dead Wingmate Roc, and casting it, this time with Raid! Kyle goes from almost no board presence to a board full of 3/4 Flying Birds!
But Kyle’s Birds are no match for Brad’s Dragons. Brad plays a Xenagos, the Reveler, uses its plus ability to cast a hasty Stormbreath Dragon and attacks past Kyle’s White birds. Kyle attacks Brad back, gaining enough life to live…or so he had thought. Brad has a second Stormbreath Dragon and that, in combination with a haste 2/2 Satyr, thanks to Xenagos, means that Brad has won the game and the match, 2-0!
Brad wins Game 2, and the match, 2-0! Brad is on to the finals!
