Semifinals: Marc Konig vs. Ben Friedman
Marc Konig traveled to the US from Denmark to compete in Legacy tournaments, and has reached the top 4 here with Death and Taxes for his efforts. He’d face stiff competition in Ben Friedman, a four-time Invitational Top 8 competitor.
Marc kicked things off with an Aether Via l, while Ben cast Ponder off of a Volcanic Island on his opening turn. Marc used Wasteland to set Ben back to 0 lands. Ben cast a Sensei’s Divining Top off of a second Volcanic Island on his next turn, but Marc was ready with a Wasteland for that one, too. He took the opportunity to activate his Aether Vial and put Phyrexian Revoker into play before passing, shutting off Ben’s Sensei’s Divining Top.
Ben found a fetchland for another Volcanic Island on his next turn, and used Lightning Bolt to kill off the Revoker. Marc snuck in a Serra Avenger with his Vial at Ben’s end step, then untapped and used it again, putting a second Phyrexian Revoker into play to shut off the Sensei’s Divining Top again. Ben found some more land, and passed back. Marc attacked Ben down to 8, then shipped the turn and attempted to use Rishashan Port in Ben’s upkeep. Ben tapped the Volcanic Island being targeted to cast Brainstorm in response, but Marc used Aether Vial to put Spirit of the Labyrinth into play, converting Brainstorm into “Draw one, put two back.”
Ben cast Stoneforge Mystic for Batterskull before passing, but Marc forced him to block with it before it could be used by attacking with his team. Ben fell to 2, checked his top card, and conceded the game.

Marc kicked things off with a Mother of Runes, but Ben quickly sent it farming with a Swords to Plowshares. Marc’s next attempt to establish a board presence was Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, but Ben responded with a Brainstorm and then countered it with Force of Will, pitching True-Name Nemesis. Ben untapped, drew, and passed with two lands up. When Marc Wastelanded one of them away, Ben flashed in a Containment Priest, which did nothing to prevent Marc’s follow up of Stoneforge Mystic fetching Sword of Fire and Ice.
Ben had no play other than a land on his following turn, and Marc quickly added Mother of Runes to his board and shipped back, leaving mana up to use his Stoneforge Mystic. Ben fetched up a Volcanic Island to cast Lightning Bolt on the Mother of Runes before it could cause any trouble, but the Sword of Fire and Ice entered play. Marc equipped it to his Stoneforge Mystic and attacked, prompting a chump block from the Containment Priest. His next attack connected, drawing him a card and dropping Ben to 11.
When Marc attacked again on his next turn, Ben was ready with Swords to Plowshares, but Marc had a replacement threat in the form of Phyrexian Revoker naming Stoneforge Mystic, as well as an Aether Vial. Marc’s called shot proved correct as Ben cast a Stoneforge Mystic getting Umezawa’s Jitte. Marc equipped his Phyrexian Revoker and attacked, prompting another chump block. Ben drew his card and, still without a third land or a way to get the Swordsed up Invoker off the board, scooped up his cards.
