Semifinals: Matt Costa vs. Josh Hartwell
These players met in the Swiss, but this match was for the right to keep their marbles in the mix—the winner would advance to the finals. It was a mirror match, but these players’ sideboards were very different and it promised to be an interesting RUG matchup.
Josh mulliganed after taking the play, while Matt made a contemplative keep. Volcanic Island and pass for Josh, while Matt started on Misty Rainforest and fetched for Tropical Island, casting Delver of Secrets. Josh responded with Thought Scour on himself, but no Daze meant the 1/1 landed.
Forked Bolt threatened to remove it, but Matt Force of Willed removing Ponder. Matt defended from Spell Pierce with Daze, and that concluded Josh’s turn. Matt replayed his Tropical Island and Pondered, keeping the top three and attacking.
Josh passed turn 3 with no plays beyond Scalding Tarn, and Matt’s Delver revealed Lightning Bolt to flip. He attacked for 3 damage, putting Josh to 16, and added Nimble Mongoose to the field before ending his turn, on two lands but with two threats clocking Josh! Josh Bolted the Delver dead, and sent the turn.
Matt got his Mongoose lose with Thought Scour, playing Wasteland and attacking for 3 to put Josh on 13. Josh Wastelanded Tropical Island and Matt retaliated, doing the same before sending in the Mongoose once again. Josh replaced the land, and passed. Matt swung for 3 damage once again, dropping Josh to 7 and playing another Tropical Island.
When Josh Pondered into Nimble Mongoose, Matt responded with Brainstorm. Josh Force of Willed, pitching Daze and going to 6 life. He traded Mongooses, and cast Tarmogoyf, to which Josh replied with a fetch for Tropical Island, Spell Snaring the Tarmogoyf—but Matt’s Daze went live, and now he was threatening to put Josh on 1 with his next attack.
Looking for a blocker, Josh went to the top of the deck—and found none. He went to 1, and Lightning Bolt finished the deed.

Matt's learning the ropes of RUG Delver this weekend, to much success.
Each player kept seven and Josh started with Tropical Island and Delver of Secrets. Matt did the exact same, but Josh flipped first revealing Ponder. He added Scalding Tarn to the mix and attacked Matt for 3, fetching Volcanic Island and then casting Ponder. Matt’s Delver failed to flip, so he swung 1 damage and resolved another Delver, fearing no Forked Bolt.
Josh played Scalding Tarn and then cast Tarmogoyf, which resolved. He attacked for 3 with the Aberration, leaving Matt on 14 as he begged for a Delver flip. He revealed Submerge, gaining two 3/2s and drawing the power spell. Matt attacked with both, seizing the lead, and cast a Tarmogoyf of his very own. Force of Will countered, removing Daze, but Matt responded by fetching to Spell Pierce his Tarmogoyf through.
Sort of stuck with a dead fetchland due to the threat of Submerge on his Tarmogoyf, Josh was on two lands. He decided to go for the fetchland, and Matt respected the potential of a Spell Pierce, keeping Submerge in his hand. Josh grabbed his Taiga, then Dismembered one Aberration and passed without attacking. That Submerge was pretty live now—Matt pointed it at the Tarmogoyf on Josh’s side after playing a fourth land.
He then swung Josh to 2 life, trading Aberrations, and played Nimble Mongoose to earn the concession.
