Semifinals: Mike Kenney vs. Andrew Kellogg
This semifinal matchup paired two Columbus area players against each other, as the No. 3 seed Mike Kenney brought Big Boros to battle and No. 7 seed Andrew Kellogg looked to answer the red and white threats with his B/W Midrange build. Would Kenney’s Boros build backed by Purphoros reach the finals or would Kellogg and Obzedat’s council come to another decision?

Kenney, on the play and down two cards from mulligans, found a keepable five and led with a Mutavault. Kellogg dropped a Godless+Shrine and passed. Kenney played a Plains and got in for 2 with the land. Kellogg matched the Mutavault and passed with no play. Kenney scryed a card to the bottom with a temple and sat back on his mana. Kelloogg played another Shrine and passed. Kenney played a Sacred+Foundry tapped and played a Young+Pyromancer, which immediately had its flesh devoured. Kellogg dropped another Mutavault and deployed a Desecration+Demon as his first real threat. Kenney answered with an Assemble+the+Legion. Kellogg swung for 6 with the demon and followed it up with a Blood+Baron+of+Vizkopa. Kenney chained the demon to the rocks and passed with one soldier token in play.
Legion (and Purphoros) assembled!
Kellogg attacked with Blood Baron and Kenney chumped it with a Mutavault. Kellogg scryed a card away with a temple then landed an Underworld+Connections on the Shrine. Kellogg passed and Kenney finished off the Baron with a Lightning+Strike. Kenney’s Legion ticked up and he swung in for 3 with the tokens. Kenney followed it up with a Purphoros%2C+God+of+the+Forge. Kellogg responded with a Pack+Rat and passed. Three more soldiers came into play and dealt Kellogg 6, then turned the soldiers sideways. Kellogg made a rat and blocked two soldiers. Kenney used the God to pump in more damage and dropped Kellogg to 4. Kellogg went on the rat plan and killed off Young+Pyromancer with a Doom+Blade before attacking, but conceded Game 1 after seeing the lethal swing back positioned across from him.

Kellogg scryed away a card with a temple and Kenney started with a tapped Sacred+Foundry. Kellogg kept a card on top with a temple and Kenney played a Mountain. Kellogg played a Mutavault and Thoughtseized Kenney to see a grip full of removal, a Chandra%2C+Pyromaster, and an Assemble+the+Legion. Kellogg picked the Legion and attacked with the Mutavault. Kenney found a third land and passed. Kellogg attacked with a Mutavault and passed. Kenney did not find a fourth land and passed without a play. Kellogg dropped Kenney to 14 with another Mutavault hit. Kenney found a temple and kept the scry on top. Kellogg started the turn with a Duress and took the planeswalker, then dropped Kenney to 12 with the Mutavault. Kenney drew and passed. Kellogg played a demon and passed, while Kenney deployed a Young+Pyromancer and chained the demon to the rocks.

Kellogg used Devour+Flesh to get rid of the Pyromancer and attacked for two more from the land. Kenney again passed with no play and Kellogg put a Pack+Rat into play. Kenney chained that rat to a rock and passed. Kellogg, stalled at four lands, moved to discard and pitched an Obzedat%2C+Ghost+Council. Kenney played an Elspeth, Sun’s Champion, made three soldiers and Kellogg answered the Elspeth with a Hero’s Downfall. Kellogg passed and Kenney played a Stormbreath+Dragon and swung with the team. Kellogg animated Mutavault but it got struck down by lightning. Kellogg dealt with the dragon via Doom+Blade before damage.
Kellogg passed again and Kenney played another dragon that was again answered by a Doom+Blade. Kenney continued to swing in with soldier tokens that dropped Kellogg to 9, then followed it up with a second Elspeth and plussed. Kellogg passed with mana up. Kenney turned the six soldiers sideways and Kellogg fell to five after killing off two tokens with cheap removal spells. Kenney then ended the turn with a Chandra. Kellogg pondered his options but extended the hand showing a hand of Barons, Elspeths and another Obzedat.
