Semifinals: Morgan Burks vs. James Allen
Burn was back for the Richmond Legacy Open, with James Allen making it into the Top 4 after a slide into eighth seed. He faced Morgan Burks, piloting one of the many Stoneforge Mystic archetypes in the Legacy format, and hoped to have a fiery finish prepared.
Morgan confesses he's not certain about his shot against all the red spells.
A mulligan to six for Morgan on the play, starting with Tropical Island and a pass. James began on Lava Spike, passing afterward. Brainstorm for Morgan before he played Dryad Arbor, passing turn. James cast Figure of Destiny and then Lightning Bolt on Dryad Arbor, trading 3 damage for a Wasteland against Morgan's mulligan.
It looked correct, as Morgan Brainstormed again on the next turn, still searching for something to make his hand go active. Tundra was not the shuffle effect he likely wanted, and Morgan passed after playing it. James attacked for 1 damage, and Morgan decided to Plow it—James made it a 2/2 for the additional life, casting another Figure of Destiny and suspending Rift Bolt afterward.
Stoneforge Mystic resolved on the next turn from James, fetching Umezawa's Jitte. James probably didn't mind that, and declined to Rift Bolt the Mystic. He attacked with Figure, earning a block from Stoneforge, and made the Figure a 4/4 before ending his turn tapped out.
Another Brainstorm from Morgan on his own turn, playing Savannah afterward and passing. When Morgan tapped out to Swords the Figure of Destiny, James cast Price of Progress to deal him 6 damage and followed with two Fireblasts, for 14 damage exactly. Ouch!

James shuffles up his Burn deck for game 2.
Savannah and pass for Morgan, taking 3 damage immediately as James started on Mountain and Lava Spike. Tropical Island from Morgan enabled Stoneforge Mystic, James nodding as the Mystic searched for Umezawa's Jitte. Another Lava Spike from James went to the dome on Morgan, and he suspended Rift Bolt.
Brainstorm from Morgan, followed by a Noble Hierarch and Misty Rainforest. James sent Rift Bolt to the dome and then tapped out to resolve Sulfuric Vortex! That would really hurt Jitte in the matchup, and Morgan fell to 9 in his upkeep. That became 8, fetching Forest, and Morgan resolved Green Sun's Zenith for two to find Qasali Pridemage, attacking for 3 damage with Stoneforge Mystic.
James went to 15 from Vortex, suspended a Rift Bolt, and played Barbarian Ring. Morgan naturally popped the Vortex during the end step with Pridemage, untapping into Jitte. He equipped Stoneforge Mystic, and James replied with Lightning Bolt on the Mystic. During the end step, James cast Price of Progress to put Morgan on 4 life, untapping into threshold via Rift Bolt—Barbarian Ring does it again!
