Semifinals: Reid Duke vs. Chas Hinkle
Semifinals: Chas Hinkle vs. Reid Duke
Reid is going for the rarely-seen ‘double,’ attempting to be the first player to go back-to-back since Gerry Thompson completed the feat at SCG Pittsburgh last year. Furthermore, he’s looking to take two unsung archetypes, RUG Ramp in Standard and U/W Miracle Tax in Legacy, to new heights of popularity. Standing in his way is Chas Hinkle, a Maverick pilot with dreams of spoiling Reid’s dream Sunday. Can he take away the storyline and create one of his own?
Reid took the play thanks to Chas’ upset of Greg Reelitz in the first round, but he mulliganed. Chas kept his opener, and after Reid kept his six they were ready to play. Reid led with Flooded Strand. Chas led with Cavern of Souls and Noble Hierarch. Reid fetched end of turn and cast Brainstorm to try to find some better mana. He found what he wanted, able to cast Counterbalance off of another Island. Chas cast Thalia, Guardian of Thraben off of the Cavern and passed. Reid went for Trinket Mage and searched up Sensei’s Divining Top with the format’s third-most popular Human Wizard. Chas played Windswept Heath and searched up a second Savannah, then threw down card advantage engine Sylvan Library. Force of Will got revealed off of the blind Counterbalance, so it resolved. Mother of Runes also joined the party, and after Thalia bashed in for three he passed.
Reid cast Sensei’s Divining Top on his turn (paying the Thalia tax, leaving him with two mana available) and passed, having not dealt with Chas’ ever increasing ground force. Chas attempted Qasali Pridemage, which was met with Force of Will from Reid after he didn’t find a two casting cost spell on top with his Top. Thalia bashed in to Reid after Wasteland took out Reid’s Tundra and then he ended his turn. Reid played Polluted Delta and passed. Chas paid four life off of Library, going to 15, and then dropped Reid to 8 with another Exalted Thalia attack. Reid spent the end of turn activating Top and thinking a while before activating Polluted Delta, both for basic Island and for the shuffle, then Topping again. Finding nothing very exciting, he played a land and passed.
Chas Hinkle awaits his next turn!
Chas put Reid to four with his attack and had no other action. Reid, after furious searching with Top and another fetchland, attempted to stack rearranging the top three and responding with drawing the Top card, but Chas Wastelanded Reid’s Polluted Delta in response. Reid let that resolve, and he cast Swords to Plowshares on Thalia. He untapped and cast Jace, the Mind Sculptor, which bounced Mother of Runes. Chas, now Motherless and Thalia-less, paid four life for more Library books. He attacked with a 2/3 Noble Hierarch at Reid (after Noble number two precombat) and put Reid to two (to Chas’ 14). He cast another Thalia and passed. Reid used Jace’s Brainstorm ability and cast Sensei’s Divining Top. Chas cast Swords to Plowshares targeting Trinket Mage, but Swords was Counterbalanced by a sensei’s top on top of reids deck. Thalia attempted to kill Reid, but Swords to Plowshares in Reid’s hand took care of that. Chas’ cast Mother of Runes post combat off of Cavern of Souls and Fauna Shaman, to which Reid responded with a Top activation but it resolved.
Reid pressed the action now, strangely to Chas it seems, by attacking with Trinket Mage. Fauna Shaman blocked, and Reid then bounced Mother of Runes before passing. After Noble Hierarch attacked, Reid Miracled an Entreat the Angels with X equaling four off of a Top activation. All four blocked the 2/3 and it died a glorious death. Chas’ Green Sun’s Zenith for two found Scryb Ranger, and he untapped his Heirarch by returning a Savannah which later got replayed and helped cast a pair of Mother of Runes, one of which was Counterbalanced by a Sensei’s Divining Top whereas the other resolved through the Cavern. Reid cast and used top on his turn and then he swung in with a choir of Angels (three to be precise), putting him to 4. Jace killed itself to bounce Mother of Runes. Chas debated the top three cards of his (Sylvan) Library and eventually decided that Reid’s air force was too much and he succumbed to the fliers.
Reid 1, Chas 0.
Chas led things off with Wooded Foothills for Savannah, which paid for Noble Hierarch. Reid led with Relic of Progenitus. Qasali Pridemage from Chas on turn two meant an attack down to 18 on Reid’s life total. Reid’s second land was Tundra. Chas untapped and used Wasteland on the blue-white dual land, which floated a white and Swords to Plowshares took out the Pridemage. Chas cast Green Sun’s Zenith for two, which popped a Gaddock Teeg into play, and then ended his turn. Reid cracked Relic to draw the card, play a fetchland, and passed. Turn three Thrun, the Last Troll from Chas and an attack for two was Chas’ turn three, a very nice turn indeed. Reid made the Gaddock Teeg pick up farming with Swords to Plowshares at the end of the turn though, to make things a little less exciting. Reid untapped and played Land Tax, and after playing the recently unbanned enchantment he passed.
Chas attacked for four with the Scars of Mirrodin legend, but had no follow-up after that. Reid searched up a bevy of lands on his turn, and he used one of them to help cast Trinket Mage. Reid elected to find a trinket named Grafdigger’s Cage, and moving to discard step discarded that very Cage (thinning his deck of “terrible cards,” as he explained). Thrun rumbled in for more damage, and Knight of the Reliquary joined in the fun for Chas. Reid tapped out to bounce Knight of the Reliquary with Jace, the Mind Sculptor on his turn. Chas cast Engineered Explosives for three to take the Trinket Mage out of commission, and with Reid sitting at exactly four life Thrun did in the Land Tax pilot.
Reid 1, Chas 1.
Reid Duke plans out his attack!
On the play, Reid led with a land and Land Tax. Chas led off with Karakas into Engineered Explosives for one. Reid simply drew and passed. Chas used his second land to help activate the Explosives. Reid cast Brainstorm on his turn, then also cast Relic of Progenitus. Chas Wastelanded Reid’s Tundra and then followed with Thalia. Flooded Strand from Reid helped find an Island to be able to cast Swords to Plowshares with the Thalia tax while Karakas was tapped. Qasali Pridemage joined the fight for Chas, but no third land followed. Reid played a third land and cast Oblivion Ring targeting the Cat Wizard.
Sylvan Library was Chas’ next play but yet again no third land for the Maverick player. Reid popped the Relic to draw a card and then cast another one on his turn before passing. Another Thalia joined Chas’ team, but it quickly picked up farming and was exiled. Reid blew up his Relic for the second straight turn and passed. Chas paid for life now for extra cards and cast Knight of the Reliquary with a newly found Wasteland. That got Path to Exiled at end of turn, netting Chas a Forest. Reid’s turn was draw-go. Green Sun’s Zenith from Chas activated Reid’s trapcard, a hardcast Force of Will. He followed it up with Mother of Runes and passed. Reid cast Grafdigger’s Cage then was done. Chas attacked with the 1/1 Human Cleric (dropping Reid to 15) and then cast Fauna Shaman. Reid once again just untapped and passed.
Fauna Shaman attacked for two, and Chas then attempted yet another Thalia. Reid played Oboro, Palace in the Clouds and passed. A pair of two power two mana creatures took Reid to 9, and another joined Chas’ team postcombat, the imposing Kithkin Advisor Gaddock Teeg. Reid once more played a land and passed. Chas attacked for six, which drew Brainstorm from Reid followed by Snapcaster Mage, which targeted Path to Exile (but couldn’t cast it because of Grafdigger’s Cage). Tiago Chan blocked Gaddock Teeg, which got bounced to Chas’ hand by Karakas, and was replayed via Cavern of Souls naming Kithkin. Chas drew a card off of Horizon Canopy and passed.
Reid calmly drew… and passed.
Reid went to 3 after Chas’ attack, where Snapcaster traded with Shaman, and postcombat he added sSavenging Ooze. Reid attempted to Path to Exile Gaddock Teeg, but mother protected it. Failing to find another Path to Exile, he extended his hand. Just like Josh Cho this morning, Reid had to settle for a top four finish after receiving a trophy in the previous tournament.
Chas 2, Reid 1.
