Semifinals: Ruger Hebert vs. David Hunting
Ruger and David are playing two of the most popular decks of the weekend: Jund and R/G Aggro. Which Scavenging Ooze deck will make it to the semifinals?
Ruger's swinging in the red zone with his team!
David led things off with a Blood Crypt and Ruger began sans mana-Elf with Stomping Ground. David was unable to develop his mana with Farseek, and Ruger took advantage with FLinthoof Boar. Lifebane Zombie came down turn three and revealed…
Flinthoof Boar (which was exiled), Scavenging Ooze, a pair of Mizzium Mortars, Rootbound Crag, and Hellrider. Ruger cast Mizzium Mortars to knock off the Lifebane Zombie before attacking for three with the Boar, drawing first blood and setting David to 17. David cast Scavenging Ooze and passed, blanking the Ooze in Ruger’s hand a bit. Ruger was forced to use Mizzium Mortars on the Ooze, to which David responded by removing the one creature (Lifebane Zombie) to gain a life. Boar attacked for three, and Scavenging Ooze joined Ruger’s board.
Then everybody’s favorite 5/3, Thragtusk (sorry Marauding Maulhorn), joined the fray to provide a nice life cushion and two three-toughness bodies for Ruger to have to deal with. Hellrider joined the board, and after triggers, blocking Hellrider, and Scavenging Ooze going up to 3/3 size, David fell to 11. David cast another Scavenging Ooze on his turn, and with Ruger tapped out immediately grew it to 4/4 and gained life from the bodies on the floor. This in turn tapped David low, so the window to drop Thundermaw Hellkite was open and allowed Ruger the time to drop David to 8.
Olivia Voldaren was a small speed bump only at this point, but should David get to untap it would quickly take over the game. Ruger did not leave that window open long though, swinging in with his pair of 3/3s and 5/5 flyer. After some blockers were declared and nothing was chosen to block Thundermaw Hellkite, Ruger went for the gusto: Ghor-Clan Rampager bloodrush on Flinthoof Boar to seal the deal.
Ruger 1, David 0.
Ruger then grinned as he revealed the second copy of Ghor-Clan Rampager still lurking in his hand. David chuckled.
“That’s pretty good.”
David's controlling the enemy in the top 4!
Slow development once more for both players, with no Farseek for David anda topdecked Elvish Mystic for Ruger. No turn three play for David either, and Ruger slammed the turn three Burning Earth on his empty-boarded Jund opponent. Huntmaster of the Fells meant he had some offense and defense on the board but had to take a lot of damage to do it… and after taking one damage, Thundermaw Hellkite on turn four was quite the beating.
David elected to pass the turn, using Ravager of the Fells to knock off the Elvish Mystic. Putrefy on the Thundermaw Hellkite meant David took three more to fall to 10 but the big beefy Dragon was no longer haunting him. Instead, Flinthoof Boar came down and Mizzium Mortars removed the 4/4 trampler. David cast another Huntmaster on his next turn to add more bodies to the board, but the steady stream of aggressive red and green beats proved to be quite problematic. Kessig Wolf Run was Ruger’s land drop for the turn, and used the land to cast another Thundermaw Hellkite! David fell to 3.
David attacked for four with his Wolf tokens, and one got Boar’d to death on defense. This let Tragic Slip knock off the Dragon… but Flames of the Firebrand did the final points of damage to seal the deal.
Ruger 2, David 0.
