Semifinals: Stephen Mann vs. Jonathan Sparks
Stephen went to six and started off with a Nimble Mongoose off a Tropical Island. Jonathan had a Delver of Secrets to match one drops. Stephen sent in the Mongoose and followed it up with a Tarmogoyf that met a Daze from Jonathan, but Stephen Dazed back returning his Tropical Island. The counter war didn’t end there as Jonathan had a Force of Will to trump, pitching a Ponder.
Jonathan Thoughtseized and took a Lightning Bolt from Stephen, then attacked with the unflipped Delver. Stephen used a Wasteland to destroy Jonathan’s Underground Sea and attacked with the Mongoose. Jonathan attacked and played a Polluted Delta before passing. Stephen resolved a Delver of Secrets of his own and Jonathan Brainstormed at end of turn. Jonathan flipped his Delver, got in for three, then played a Tarmogoyf. Stephen’s Delver also flipped, his off a Force of Will, but fetched up a land in response to get a fresh draw.
Stephen played another Nimble Mongoose and kept his Delver back before shipping the turn. Jonathan Pondered before sending both creatures into the red zone, dropping Stephen to 9 after he traded Delvers. Jonathan fetched up another Underground Sea and played a replacement Delver before passing. Stephen sent in both Mongooses, now hitting their threshold, and dropped Jonathan to 6. Jonathan flipped his Delver off a Thoughtseize and decided not to attack. Stephen drew and also declined to attack.
Jonathan passed again with no attacks. Stephen Pondered and had to pay one more after Jonathan burned a Daze. Stephen found a Wasteland to get rid of Jonathan’s Tropical Island and kept his creatures back. Jonathan tired of keeping his flyer back and sent in the Insectile Aberration to put both players at 6, then passed. Stephen added a Tarmogoyf to his board and passed. Jonathan tried to fetch up a land, but Stephen Stifled it and Jonathan dropped to 5.
Jonathan bashed for three in the air, cracked another Polluted Delta, bringing himself to 4, and passed after getting a Bayou. Stephen sent in the team, but Jonathan had an Abrupt Decay for the Goyf, then he killed off a Mongoose with his Tarmogoyf, and fell to 1. Stephen Gitaxian Probed, but didn’t find an answer to the Insectile Aberration and conceded the game.

Stephen led the game off with a Delver of Secrets and Jonathan played around Stifle by fetching up an Underground Sea while Stephen was tapped out. Stephen attacked, then used a Wasteland on Jonathan’s Underground Sea, though Jonathan did use the mana off his land to Brainstorm before putting it in the bin. Jonathan tried to resolve a Deathrite Shaman, but Stephen had the Daze. Stephen sent in his Delver again and destroyed Jonathan’s Bayou with another Wasteland.
Jonathan fetched up another Underground Sea and passed with no play. Stephen dropped Jonathan to 15 off Delver beats and replayed his Tropical Island before passing. Jonathan played a Diabolic Edict after adding a Wasteland of his own to his mana base. Stephen had his third Wasteland destroy Jonathan’s Underground Sea and passed. Jonathan had another Polluted Delta, but no play.
Stephen used a Gitaxian Probe to look at Jonathan’s hand, then resolved a Grim Lavamancer. Jonathan attempted to fetch up a land, but Stephen had the Stifle, so Jonathan played a Bayou from hand and resolved a Tarmogoyf. Stephen matched with a Tarmogoyf of his own before passing back. Jonathan wanted to get in on the Wasteland action, but Stephen had the Stifle to save his land.
Stephen Brainstormed then turned his Tarmogoyf sideways. Stephen added a Nimble Mongoose to his board and passed, with the Mongoose well over threshold. Jonathan went to 8 after fetching up an Underground Sea and used a Golgari Charm to kill off the Lavamancer, but not before it hit Jonathan for two in response. Stephen untapped and Brainstormed and found another Mongoose to add to his board presence, but didn’t attack. Jonathan found a Delver of Secrets and passed.
Stephen sent the team across and Joanthan fell to 3 after chumping the Goyf with the Delver and killing off a Mongoose with his own Tarmogoyf. Stephen didn’t mind the loss as he had his third Mongoose to play. Jonathan Brainstormed to find an answer, but scooped up his cards after coming up short.

That Game 2 left Jonathan parched!
Jonathan led this game off with a Thoughtseize, ripping a Delver of Secrets out of Stephen’s hand, leaving him with Brainstorm, Ponder, two Lightning Bolts, and two lands. Stephen opted for a turn-1 play of Ponder after fetching up a Volcanic Island. Jonathan had a Ponder of his own, then used a Wasteland to get rid of Stephen’s colored mana source. Stephen considered his options before using a Wasteland of his own to do away with Jonathan’s dual land. Jonathan was able to fetch up another Underground Sea with no fear of Stifle and Pondered. Stephen found a Flooded Strand and passed with no play.
Jonathan continued to cantripping, this time with a Brainstorm, then cracked a Polluted Delta for a Tropical Island and shipped the turn. Stephen got in on the Brainstorm action, cracked a Flooded Strand for a Volcanic Island and attempted to Ponder, but Jonathan Dazed it. Jonathan used another fetch to find a replacement Underground Sea and resolved a 4/5 Tarmogoyf.
Stephen paid four life to use a Dismember to deal with the Tarmogoyf and fell to 14. Jonathan played another amazing two-drop, Dark Confidant then passed. Stephen tried to bolt it at end of turn, but Jonatahn had a Daze to keep Bob alive. Stephen untapped and fired his second Lightning Bolt at the Great One and killed it. Jonathan played a land and passed with no action. Stephen used his next turn to blow up an Underground Sea with a Wasteland and passed back.
Jonathan found a threat, this time a Deathrite Shaman and passed. Stephen played a Nimble Mongoose and Submerged the Shaman for free. Jonathan cast a Diabolic Edict, but Stephen Dazed it and had the Stifle for the fetch land Jonathan attempted to use to find a land to pay the one mana. Stephen paid the two life to see Jonathan’s hand with Gitaxian Probe, then sent in his 3/3 Mongoose. Jonathan landed a Delver of Secrets and attempted to play a Deathrite Shaman, but Stephen had a Submerge for it. Stephen untapped and dropped Jonathan to 7 with his Mongoose. After the attack, Stephen played a Tarmogoyf and Submerged the Deathrite Shaman once again. Jonathan knowing what he would draw extended the hand.
