Semifinals: Travis Cowley vs. Robert Lopuski
Robert and Travis are running some of the format’s finest midrange menaces: Punishing Jund and Death and Taxes respectively. Keeping Legacy fair! Which of these creature piles can pile it on into the top 8?
Travis had the play and led with Plains and Robert used his forst turn to use a fetchland to find Swamp for Thoughtseize. Travis revealed Serra Avenger Stoneforge Mystic, Phyrexian Revoker, and three lands (including two Rishadan Port). The Mystic hit the bin and Travis untapped and cast Mother of Runes. Robert used another fetchland to find Badlands and Punishing Fire the Mom. Travis clarified that the Punishing Fire ability was a triggered (and non-Revokerable) ability before casting a freshly drawn Stoneforge Mystic to get Batterskull.
Liliana of the Veil used the -2 Diabolic Edict ability to make Travis lose his Stoneforge Mystic, and the Revoker quickly named Liliana and the Serra Avenger also joined the fray. Robert was okay with this, as Tarmogoyf and Dark Confidant came down. The Avenger knocked out the planeswalker, bumping the ‘Goyf up to 4/5. But Robert continued to be cookin’ with gas, as Tarmogoyf swung in and Wasteland took out a Port. The hits kept coming on Robert’s turn, as Punishing Fire took down a Revoker (but dealt three, to take Robert to 13). Jund is build for these types of matchups, and it showed.
Liliana of the Veil (now able to use its ability) was the Dark Confidant trigger this time, dropping Trevor to 10. Then a fetchland took him to 9, but that was only to keep his foot on the pedal: attack for five with the Lhurgoyf (Travis to 11), another one post combat, and then on Travis’ turn a mid-combat Abrupt Decay took out the 3/3 vigilance flier. Travis could only tap Badlands on Robert’s upkeep, and Liliana removed Travis’ last creature before the creatures attacked. A Swords to Plowshares meant that Travis only fell to 4. Inquisition of Kozilek led to Flickerwisp removing the ‘Goyf from the board for the turn. A pair of Deathrite Shamans resolved after combat, and Travis scooped.
Robert 1, Travis 0.
“I try to kill your guys, you try to kill me,” said Robert, and if the first game was any indication that is certainly the case for this matchup.
Travis led with naught but Rishadan Port, and Bloodstained Mire was all Robert had. Stoneforge Mystic was Travis’ turn two play, searching up Umezawa’s Jitte, which Robert led resolve before moving to his turn and casting Dark Confidant. Swords to Plowshares took out the Bob before Travis passed right back. Travis cheated in the Jitte, but Ancient Grudge took it out before Travis could untap.
Robert 2, Travis 0.
