The Top Keeps on Spinning: Round 6 Feature Match, Tyler Arceneaux (Sea Stompy) vs. Chi Hoi Yim (UW Miracles)
Match covered and article written by Tannon Grace
This round saw Tyler Arceneaux, a local player from Lafayette who has been making a comeback to magic after some time off, versus Chi Hoi Yim who was the second place finisher at the last Star City Games Invitational in Atlanta.
Chi wins the die roll electing to play first. After both players mulled to 6 we were off. Tyler played a chalice for 1 off an Ancient+Tomb. Chi had a wasteland for the Tomb. Tyler had a city of traitors for his turn but nothing else. A turn later Tyler added two mana to his pool played an Island, binning the City, playing a Cloud of Fairies, untapping his island and played another Spellstutter+Sprite. Chi finally decided to get on the board in a big way, resolving Jace the Mind sculptor. Tyler had the Daze to counter the planeswalker but it was only a short reprieve as Chi had another Jace the following turn. Chi used the Brainstorm ability, setting up his next turn.
After an attack sent Jace to 1 loyalty Chi had a miracle Terminus followed by Jace’s +2 on himself. After a turn of nothing from Tyler, Chi plays a Counterbalance then a Detention+Sphere on the Chalice. After a few turns of Brainstorming from Jace and the actual card Brainstorm, Chi finally finds a Sensei’s Diving Top. Tyler tried to force through a few more spells but the Top kept spinning and found an answer every time. Once Chi started using Jace’s fateseal ability on his opponent and left a few cards on top Tyler decided he had seen enough and moved to his side board and game 2.
Chi Hoi 1, Tyler 0.
Both players kept their 7 card hands and Tyler lead off the game with a turn two Umezawa’s Jitte. Chi plays a top on turn 2, playing around daze, then resolved an Enlighten Tutor at Tyler’s end step, cashing in a Humility. Tyler plays a Chalice for one and Chi answers with a Counter Balance on his turn. Tyler then plays a City+of+Traitors into a Mulldrifter, which made Chi spin his Top looking for a Force+of+Will but was unable to find it. Jitte then started to gain counters when the Mulldrifter attacked the next turn. But those would be the last counters of the match for the legendary equipment as Chi had a miracle Terminus the next turn to handle the flyer.
A few turns later Tyler did manage to get an Illusory+Angel into play. Chi had the answer the next turn in the form of Jace, which as you know is ‘better than all.’ Tyler’s next turn saw him play both Sword of War and Peace and the Angel. Not to be outdone, Chi cast Detention+Sphere on the Chalice, allowing him to Swords+to+Plowshares the Angel. Not done, Chi used two Wastelands to take out an Ancient+Tomb and a City+of+Traitors...what a turn! All the while, the Top kept spinning and Jace kept Brainstorming. After his next draw phase Tyler extended the hand.
Chi Hoi 2, Tyler 0.
