Top 5 Players of the Weekend
Learn more about five players who put up a great weekend through a high finish, interesting deck, or memorable moment.
5. Matthew Tickal
Tickal's crazy 5-Color Rally brew was the talk of the tournament, amassing an 8-1 record on Day 1 with the complex combo deck. Tickal has been climbing the #SCGPC leaderboard all year and his play with his spicy deck put a face to the name. While Tickal admitted he made multiple mistakes with the deck, there is no question how powerful the strategy is in a metagame full of Abzan and G/R Devotion. Check out the Deck Tech here!
Andersen has been almost untouchable as of late playing G/R Devotion with #SCGCHI being the third-straight Standard Open Top 8 for the Indianapolis, IN resident. In fact, Andersen came into this weekend with an average finish of 8.4 in Opens in 2015. Andersen fell to Andrew Boswell in the finals of #SCGBALT just three weekends ago and is looking to improve on that finish here in the Windy City. See Andersen's decklist here!
3. Bruce Edelman
Edelman was the last undefeated player in the Open with a 12-0-1 record going into the 14th round. He finished the event at 13-1-1, taking the top seed for the Top 8 with Abzan Control, showcasing the most popular deck on Day 2 of #SCGCHI. The finish marked his second Open Series Top 8 and his build used three copies of the freshly legal Languish and Nissa, Vastwood Seer. See Edelman's list here!
Hoogland is known for bringing interesting decks to the table when a new set is released and he didn't disappoint this weekend. Not only was Hoogland's deck creative, but it proved to be quite good, propelling him to a Top 8 finish with his U/W Control deck with an artifact theme utilizing Hangarback Walker and Thopter Spy Network. Hoogland, a Top 10 player on the #SCGPC leaderboard, notched his 11th Open Series Top 8 this weekend. Check out his Deck Tech here!
1. Ross Merriam
Merriam and Danny Jessup came to Chicago separated by four points on the #SCGPC leaderboard and were neck and neck throughout the Swiss. Merriam, however, took charge of the Season Three #SCGPC points race with his Top-8 finish behind G/R Devotion while Jessup finished in 25th place. Merriam tested with Brad Nelson, Todd Anderson, and the rest of the Roanoke, VA crew for this event and notched his 16th Open Series Top 8 and fourth this year, including a win in Cleveland, OH.
