Wild Card Match: Caleb Scherer vs. Liam Lonergan
The first Wild Card Match of Sunday puts two Invitational champions against each other. Caleb is one of three players on Temur Aetherworks while Liam is the lone Four-Color Vehicles player in the field. Who will move on to face Jeff Hoogland in the quarterfinals?
Caleb kicked things off with Attune with Aether, getting a Mountain, while Liam opened with an Inventor’s Apprentice. Caleb passed after playing the Mountain and Liam attacked for one and deployed a Veteran Motorist, keeping both cards on top. Caleb killed the Motorist at the end of the turn with Harness Lightning, gaining two energy, then untapped and played a Vessel of Nascency. Liam attacked for one again and dropped Thalia, Heretic Cathar, who also died to a Harness Lightning at the end step.
Caleb cracked the Vessel on his next turn, getting an Aether Hub, played it and shipped the turn. Liam added Thraben Inspector to his board and attacked Caleb down to 16 before playing a Scrapheap Scrounger in his second main phase. Caleb added another Hub to his board, going up to seven energy, then slammed Aetherworks Marvel, spinning it immediately to get Emrakul, the Promised End. Caleb took Liam’s turn, seeing a pair of Unlicensed Disintegration and a Smuggler’s Copter. Liam killed his own Scrounger and sent his Apprentice into the Emrakul before taking another turn.
Liam deployed the Copter and passed the turn, facing down the 13/13. Caleb attacked for 13 and Liam crewed the Copter and blocked, looting away a land. Caleb followed up with a post-combat Ishkanah, Grafwidow prompting Liam to give up the game.

Liam started things off on the play with a Toolcraft Exemplar and attacked for three after playing a Thraben Inspector when Caleb only had a Forest. Liam added another Exemplar to his board and passed, leading Caleb to play a Mountain. Liam motioned to attack, but Caleb killed an Exemplar with Harness Lightning, falling to 13. Liam didn’t have a follow-up threat, but Caleb only played a land on his next turn.
Caleb again killed the Exemplar on Lonergan’s attack, letting him get in for one, then sacrificed the clue and passed. Caleb played a Woodweaver’s Puzzleknot and a Servant of the Conduit, going up to 11 energy. Liam deployed a Cultivator’s Caravan and an Inventor’s Apprentice before passing the turn back. Caleb played another Puzzleknot to go to 18 life and passed after adding an Evolving Wilds to his board. Liam crewed the Caravan and got in for five and passed after playing a tapped Concealed Courtyard. Caleb cracked a Puzzleknot at the end step and fetched an Island with the Evolving Wilds.
Caleb went up to 18 energy with an Attune with Aether, getting a Mountain, and playing it. Caleb passed back, leading Liam to crew the Caravan and knocking Caleb down to 11, until he went back to 14 with the Puzzleknot. Caleb added a Forest to his mana base and passed the turn after a quick flip through his graveyard. Liam continued to crew the Caravan and attacked, dropping Caleb to nine when he offered no blocks.
Caleb found Chandra, Torch of Defiance and used her to kill the Apprentice before passing. Liam thought about his next action before using Declaration in Stone to remove the Servant and played a Scrounger. Caleb cracked the clue and Liam crewed the Caravan and attacked Caleb to four while killing the Planeswalker with the Inspector. Things changed on the next turn as Caleb played Emrakul with his eight lands and saw three lands from Liam before killing the Caravan by sending it into the 13/13.
Liam took his next turn and could only play one of his lands before passing back. Caleb attacked with Emrakul to knock Liam to 7 and played another copy of Emrakul to replace the tapped one. Liam’s draw steps revealed another land and a Thraben Inspector so Caleb sent the Inspector into Emrakul and had Liam pass to himself. Liam deployed the new Inspector and cracked the clue, finding only another land and extended the hand.
