WHAM! Invasion Block Constructed As I See It
I'm just here to share my thoughts on Invasion Block Constructed (also known as IBC - kinda like the root beer). (This is the second, but I'm willing to bet not the last, time that you have heard this joke, folks. Give credit to the almighty Vasco Da Gama for coming up with this way back in November -- The Ferrett)
Now, depending on the validity of the spoilers. I just wanted to throw some deck ideas out to see what people thought. First, let's look at the differences between IBC (pre-Planeshift) and Type II.
Combo Potential:
I'm not talking about game-breaker combos - but just the same, combos are much more a viable option in this environment, as there is no one solid counterspell (like, say, Counterspell) to build a real solid permission deck with. Some cards that get significantly better out of the ugly shadow of UU are Harrow, or anything with a kicker cost; you get the picture.
A Li'l Bit Less Good Burn
No Seal of Fire, no Shock, no Hammer - although you still have Assault, Scorching Lava, Rage, and Ghitu Fire. This just means that more fragile creatures, like Hannah and Sisay, become slightly more viable in the environment.
No Perish.
HOORAY!
No Blastoderm.
BOO!
But that's just some thoughts on it all. Onto some decks with Planeshift in them. These decks are mainly for review...I'm not gonna cover too many individual strategies with the decks.
Deck 1: Twilight's Call
When Invasion came out, our playtest group said this would be the IBC deck to beat. Might be, but it can be built so many different ways that it will be difficult to find a consistent build.
Here's what we have so far:
4x Probe
4x Fact or Fiction
4x Cremate
4x Opt
1x Darigaaz
1x Dromar
1x Rith
1x Treva
1x Crosis
4x Vodalian Merchant
2x Rith's Attendant
4x Twilight's Call
3x Gainsay (1U, instant; counter target blue spell)
2x Phyrexian Infiltrator
4x Salt Marsh
2x Terminal Moraine (Land T: add 1 colorless, 2 T: sacrifice<this>, search your library for a basic land card and put that card into play tapped. Shuffle.)
10x Swamp
8x Island
Most of the cards don't need explanation, but for the ones that do:
Rith's Attendant - In a worst-case scenario, he can be sacrificed to hard-cast the dragons that you don't have mana for. Otherwise, he's a relatively solid 3/3.
Gainsay - He might be a better choice in the sideboard, but works against any sort of random draw-go you encounter. (But didn't you just say that IBC permission decks would be weak? - The Ferrett, confoozled)
Terminal Moraine - You may have some trouble finding that last swamp or island.
Cremate - Seems obvious, but just in case, it's a cantrip and it removes big stuff from their graveyard.
Phyrexian Infiltrator - You can do a lot of tricks with this and a bunch o'mana.
Next Deck: www.Tempo.co.uk (this is not a link, just a deck name.)
4x Recoil
4x Ravenous Rats
4x Warped Devotion (2B, enchantment; whenever a permanent is returned to a player's hand, that player chooses and discards a card)
4x Wash Out
4x Maggot Carrier (B, Creature - Zombie 1/1; When maggot carrier comes into play each player loses 1 life.)
2x Sleeper's Robe
4x Probe
4x Doomsday Specter (2UB Creature - Specter 2/3; When <this> comes into play, return a Black or Blue creature to your hand or sacrifice <this>. Flying. Whenever <this> damages an opponent, look at their hand and choose a card from it. That player discards that card.)
2x Repulse
4x Undermine
4x Salt Marsh
2x Terminal Moraine
8x Swamp
10x Island
This deck is going to be the deck to play, I think. Every card works in near-perfect harmony (with the possible exception of the Specter and Warped
Devotion - but it's a sacrifice you should be willing to make...) With the
Devotion in play, Recoil and Repulse are now even more maximized for card advantage, and Wash Out is just... Sick. Undermine is really just gonna be there to pick up any slack you can't cover when it gets into play. What specifically, I dunno, but it seems nice to have a contingency plan. If this deck doesn't win the Pro Tour I'd be pretty surprised, and if it's not present there at all (assuming that the spoiler is real), then I'll lose that post-Superbowl high I'll have when Baltimore crushes the New York Giants. (I say 16-6, but who knows?)
I suppose that we can only wait until Saturday to find out if these are real cards, but it's been fun visualizing if not. I just hope my teammates wake me up before they Go-Go on Saturday... Since I'm not plannin' on goin'.
So-Lo.
