Wizards of the Coast just announced its 2010 Grand Prix schedule, and guess what? We are going to get a double dose of Legacy next year! Not only is Wizards holding a Legacy Grand Prix in Madrid, Spain in February, there will be a Legacy Grand Prix in Columbus, Ohio on July 31st! Check it out!

Now is the time to begin learning the format, building your collection and trying out new ideas. You’ve come to the right place.

A month ago I published the Complete Vintage Checklist with trepidation. To understand my concerns, read my article here. I won’t answer all of those questions, concerns or reiterate those caveats except to direct your attention to that article.

This list has several key purposes and uses. First, if you are a Legacy enthusiast, use this list to build your collection. It should enable you to play almost anything in Legacy. Print the list out, and stick it in your trade binder as a handy reference. Second, I’ve keyed the cards that are most commonly played in the format to give you a sense of relative importance. To that end, below the checklist, I’ve organized some information about the checklist that should help you do just that, by listing the double starred cards by themselves. Third, if you are a dealer, a store or a major trader, use this list to acquire Legacy playables and build a Legacy collection for your player base or your Legacy customers.

There it is. Now, a couple of caveats beyond those I already referenced from my Vintage Checklist article. First, I’m certain that there are cards that are Legacy playable that aren’t on this list. Let me know what those cards are. I’ve omitted a few cards that really haven’t proven themselves, like Dream Halls, or cards that haven’t been played to success in some time, like Reset High Tide. I’m sure there are plenty of cards that aren’t on this list, but probably deserve a spot. I made this list from the most recent SCG $5k results and other recent Top 8s.

Second, there are probably a few cards on this list that don’t deserve to be there. Let me know what those cards are as well.

Finally, I’m certain there are cards that should be re-categorized from * to ** and from ** to *. Let me know what those cards are.

I will make changes based upon player feedback and I will make the updated checklist available, through SCG, to premium SCG members as an excel spreadsheet. I haven’t decided whether I’ll do this with the Legacy list, but with each set review, I will update my Vintage list. With each set review, I will include the cards that have become a part of the list from the previous set. I will also paste speculative cards onto the list with a special symbol marking them as possible additions.

I hope you enjoy this resource, and don’t forget to let me know if I’ve missed something important.

Until next week…

Stephen Menendian
