After a 5-0 start Edgar had taken a loss to Chris Elrod in the previous round and was forced to fight it out in the last round to remain alive for the Top 8. He had come with Team America and would have to fight his way through Blake McCracken's Affinity list in order to make it. Blake's list contained Tezzeret amongst a few other goodies and was also in the hunt for the Top 8.
Edgar started with an Underground Sea and had no responses as Blake played Darksteel Citadel Ornithopter Springleaf Drum Signal Pest and Frogmite. Edgar cracked a fetch for a Bayou and cast Hymn to Tourach discarding a Signal Pest and a Thoughtcast from Blake's hand leaving him on a single card. Blake cast a Cranial Plating and attacked for 3 missing the land he needed to equip it. Edgar would be on a fast clock without an answer immediately given that Ornithopter.
A Brainstorm didn't find him much and all Edgar had to follow with was another Hymn discarding Tezzeret Agent of Bolas. Blake equipped the Plating to his 0/2 flier and attacked a Snuff Out minimizing the damage as Edgar fell to 9. Another artifact land allowed Blake to move the Plating to a Signal Pest and Edgar sighed as he drew for turn. He needed a Tombstalker in a bad way and he removed his whole yard to cast one. Blake tossed down a Springleaf Drum and then attacked with the Signal Pest rather than moving the Plating to his Frogmite in order to preserve the evasive beater. Edgar made this trade in the hopes of using a Tarmogoyf to stop the Frogmite but he had just a pass on the next turn. He cast Snuff Out the old-fashioned way when Blake attacked and then earned a reprieve. Blake drew and cast a Springleaf Drum still on empty as Edgar drew and passed as well.
Memnite earned a hardcast Force of Will from Edgar and Blake shipped the turn. A Brainstorm looked like it could give Edgar new gas but he groaned in disgust as he put back two cards and laid a fetchland. A second Plating was a non-threat to Edgar and he cracked his fetch for a fresh draw. He chose to fateseal Blake leaving Seat of the Synod but that allowed Blake to cast Thoughtcast on the next turn. “That's tough” Edgar said as he thought eventually pitching his hand to Force of Will the spell. The fatesealing continued this time shipping a dude to the bottom before playing Tarmogoyf.
Edgar groaned as Blake cast a Memnite but it was in jest—Jace of course bounced the equipped 1/1 and the Tarmogoyf swung for 6 knocking Blake to 14. He was drawing alive once again but Mox Opal was not the creature he needed. Another bounce and another attack put Blake to 8 and a Blinkmoth Nexus was a very good draw. Edgar had options and he began the turn with a brainstorm via Jace in search of Wasteland. He found it along with a Sylvan Library and he passed the turn with Goyf in a blocking mood.
Blake drew and examined the board before dropping the land he'd drawn and animating his Nexus. Edgar blocked the Memnite with Tarmogoyf and Wastelanded the Nexus cracking Catacombs during the end step to wash away his Jace's brainstorm. Sylvan Library gave him a faux-Mirri's Guile considering his 5 life but a Tombstalker offered him a real clock. Blake bricked on a land once again taking 5 as the Tombstalker soared home. Jace's fateseal left the last card there and Blake scooped them up.

Blake took advantage of the play with just a Memnite and a Signal Pest via Darksteel Citadel whiel Edgar had an Underground Sea to cast Thoughtseize and steal Thoughtcast from a hand featuring Seat of the Synod Cranial Plating and Thoughtseize. Edgar took 2 on the ensuing attack as Blake played Seat of the Synod holding his Plating in fear of Daze. Edgar spent his second turn Pondering and dropping a Polluted Delta.
Blake played Seat of the Synod and cast Plating equipping it to Signal Pest and attacking for 8. Another Memnite landed for Blake and Edgar simply played Wasteland go. When Blake entered combat Edgar cracked his Polluted Delta to Krosan Grip Signal Pest taking just 2 damage from the Memnites and dropping to 4. Edgar played a land and passed on his fourth turn frowning as Blake cast a second Cranial Plating. With both Memnites well-equipped Edgar was dead in spite of the Grip he had in his hand.

On the play Edgar liked his chances a lot more and he kept a land-heavy hand with Tarmogoyf and cantrips. Ponder found him a pair of removal spells and Edgar passed. Blake cast Ornithopter and Mox Opal after a Seat of the Synod following with Frogmite. Edgar dropped Verdant Catacombs and cast Brainstorm fetching Bayou afterwards to Thoughtseize away an Etched Champion leaving Blake with a Master of Etherium Blinkmoth Nexus and another Etched Champion. “That's so bad” Edgar groaned knowing he had next to no answers to the Champion.
Blake cast the Champion rather than the Master not fooled into losing tempo to a Snuff Out. Frogmite attacked Edgar down to 15 and Blake passed the turn way ahead. Tarmogoy and Wasteland hoped to stabilize but Edgar would need a way to eliminate some creatures in order to find and cast Consuming Vapors to any effect. Blake tried the Master on the following turn but a Snuff Out killed it as Blake's attack dropped Edgar to 9 life.
At this point a judge pulled Edgar aside to issue him a game loss. It was discovered that he had misregistered his Engineered Plagues registering them twice at the quantities of 3 and 1 and resulting in a sideboard that did not match his deck registration. He had meant to register a single Engineered Explosives in his sideboard and the typo proved costly.
