"My real name is Chris Hagashi but I guess my name is also David Sanders." Curious I asked Chris Hagashi how they came about. "Well at a tournament one time they put my name as David Sanders so now all of my friends sometimes call me by that." As the names are put up for their feature match it is clear that the Las Vegas native will be going by Hagashi this round. His opponent Sherwin Pu is a ringer from Southern California who is seen frequently at the local PTQs.
Sherwin won the die roll and chose to go first. He led off with Verdant Catacombs for Underground Sea into Thoughtseize revealing that Chris was playing High Tide. Sherwin debated over his choices: Ponder High Tide two Time Spirals and Candelabra of Tawnos. He settled on pitching the High Tide.
Chris started things off with a fetchland activation for an Island. Chris played the Candelabra on his first turn while Sherwin Pondered into Inquisition of Kozilek to rob Chris of a Ponder. He drew a Ponder on his first turn meaning he would not be without action for the second turn. Sherwin played a Russian Dark Confidant and then passed with a Polluted Delta un-cracked.
Bob revealed a Tropical Island on Sherwin's fourth turn giving him a free card and hitting him for no additional damage. He sent Bob in for 2 damage and then Pondered for more cards. He followed it up with a 3 power Tarmogoyf before shipping the turn back. While Chris was lacking plays Sherwin had plenty with his creatures. He added to his field with a second Dark Confidant after attacking Chris down to 11.
Chris spent a minute calculating a few things and then cracked his fetchland for another Island joining his 4 four Islands in play one of them being tropical He attempted a Turnabout but promptly had it hit with Spell Pierc from Sherwin. The two Bobs revealed a Ghastly Demise and a Jace the Mind Sculptor hitting Sherwin for a fairly irrelevant 5 damage. “I just need you to hit two Force of Wills Now...” added Chris. “...and then hope you crack a fetchland.”
Once Sherwin played a Jace The Mind Sculptor and stacked his deck properly due to the Bobs it became apparent that death by Dark Confidant was not going to happen. Chris picked up his cards for the second game.

Chris led things off for game two with a turn one Candelabra of Tawnos. However his turn two Merchant Scroll ate a Misdirection from Sherwin protected by the Spell Pierce that he used on Chris's Force of Will. Hymn to Tourach finished off the remainder of Chris's hand and suddenly the game looked over before things even got started.
Chris drew and said “I'm still in this”. He played Brainstorm put two cards back and then dropped another Candle into play. While Sherwin looked to rebuild with Dark Confidant Chris shuffled up those top cards with Merchant Scroll for Brainstorm which he promptly lost to Inquisition of Kozilek while he was tapped out.
A top-decked Ponder gave him another chance at getting back into the game netting him a Misty Rainforest to shuffle those top cards again. Sherwin continued to beat down with Bob while Chris pulled the trigger on Meditate after hesitating. With a free turn to use Sherwin got to beat down again while building up his land base. A revealed Jace The Mind Sculptor from Dark Confidant brought him to 10 but it also gave him a way to mitigate his Dark Confidant damage and lock Chris out of any potential draws. A Thoughtseize and another Hymn to Tourach took the remaining Meditate cards that were in Chris's hand and a Tarmogoyf put Chris on a much tougher clock to deal with.
When Chris top-decked and attempted to cast Ponder after two turns of drawing lands Sherwin showed him Force of Will and enough mana to hard-cast it. “I have 3 Force of Wills total right now” he said. Once his Ponders were getting countered Chris offered the concession.
“The Pu is victorious!” Chris said with a smile.
