Frankie Mach had one major reason to win this event and the $2000 check: he was unfortunately a victim of theft losing his backpack of cards this weekend. If Frankie wins he continues on and increases his winnings helping him re-buy anything he may have lost today.
Wil led off with a Llanowar Elves while Frankie got things started with a Careful Study digging for a dredge engine. He found none pitching Narcomoeba and Dread Return. He found one with the second Careful Study though pitching a Golgari Thug as Wil built up his mana. A turn three Natural Order from Wil got Terastodon blowing up Frankie's lonely City of Brass which shut down Frankie's hand.
Frankie dredged the Golgari Thug leaving himself without any lands. He took the first attack from Terastodon going to 9. He drew a card for his turn a Gemstone Mine that turned on his Cabal Therapy to discard his own Golgari Thug. An Elvish Champion let Wil drop Frankie to 3 when Frankie chump blocked three of Wil's five attacking creatures and a Golgari Thug dredge found plenty of action with multiple Golgari Grave Trolls.
Once Frankie saw this he immediately played Breakthrough dredging up a storm and putting one of his fatties an Iona Shield of Emeria into the graveyard. It also got him two Narcomoebas which turned on his Cabal Therapy and Bridges from Below. He flashed back a Cabal Therapy to see Wil's hand making three zombies with his Bridges and then flashed back Dread Return for Iona (calling green) getting three more zombies in the unfair exchange.
Attacks from Wil met a ton of blocks from Frankie's zombies which because of Wil's Elvish Archdruid and Imperious Perfect left all of Wil's creatures alive and unable to get rid of Frankie's Bridges from Below. An attack from Iona took a chunk out of Wil's life total and the returned Ichorids from Frankie's upkeep were fed into another Dread Return for Golgari Grave-Troll getting another six zombies. One turn later and two recurred Ichorids later Wil was picking up his cards for the second game.
Frankie – 1 Wil – 0
Wil opened up with an explosive start of turn one Llanowar Elves and turn two Llanowar Elves with Wheel of Sun and Moon. Frankie who had skipped his land-drop to discard Golgari Grave-Troll dredged his Golgari Grave-Troll back anyway and then played a land to Nature's Claim the hateful enchantment.
It can't really get faster than that for Wil.
Frankie – 1 Wil – 1
Frankie and Wil both kept their hands for the third and final game. Frankie led off with Cabal Therapy blind-calling Relic of Progenitus and hitting a copy of the dredge-hate out of Wil's hand. He also revealed a hand with three-drop elves and a Natural Order meaning Wil's game-plan was going to be lacking for a few turns.
Fortunately for the elves player Frankie also had a slow draw. However when Wil top-decked and played Priestess of Titania Frankie got an extra target for his Firestorm to pitch all but his in-hand Bridge from Below (including an Ichorid and a Golgari Grave-Troll) blowing up the Priestess and hitting both players for 1.
Frankie's first dredge milled him an Iona Shield of Emeria and Dread Return but he did not have the necessary creatures to get the game-ender into play. Once Wil played his top-decked Gaddock Teeg through a Green Sun's Zenith the game-plan disappeared anyway. Which was fine as Frankie had an Ichorid to bring back for some beatdowns and his dredge-engines kept milling more dredge-enablers. The first big dredge only found more dredge-enablers but a second Ichorid found its way into the graveyard on the second dredge turn. Wil dropped to 14 after the second attack from Ichorid. His only hope was to race at this point.
Another turn later attacks from the two Ichorids dropped Wil to 8. In the next turn and dredges put two Bridge from Belows in Frankie's graveyard. Wil didn't leave any blockers back and thus couldn't block one of the Ichorids to get those Bridges out of the graveyard. Attacks from the Ichorids put Wil to 2 and then the end of the turn Frankie got four zombies in play as the Ichorids dropped back into the graveyard. When Wil attempted a Natural Order Frankie reminded him that Gaddock Teeg affected him too. The kicker? He couldn't block to get rid of his Gaddock Teeg anymore or else Frankie would be able to post-combat flashback a Dread Return for Iona locking him out of the match anyway!
Once Wil figured this out he offered the concession.
Frankie – 2 Wil - 1
