One way or another this Legacy Open would have a combo finish. Would it be Alexander Kwan's Painted Stone deck or Joe Lossett's Cephalid Breakfast? The match promised to be dynamic with both players threatening death backed by Force of Wills. As combo mirrors go this one promised to be pretty interesting.
Joe won the die roll and contemplated whether or not to keep as Alexander revealed a Force of Will to him in an effort to speed up the process. Joe eventually decided to mulligan to six finding those acceptable. He opened with Underground Sea and Ponder shuffling back the three cards after analyzing them carefully. Alexander simply cast a Sensei's Divining Top off a Seat of the Synod and sent the turn to Joe. Another Underground Sea and Joe cast Cabal Therapy for Force of Will revealing a Misdirection Pyroblast two Goblin Welders and a Great Furnace. He landed Aether Vial next and passed.
Alexander Topped during his upkeep for additional development finding a Flooded Strand to reset the top cards and dig up Volcanic Island. He cast Goblin Welder but Joe Dazed the 1/1. His Vial ticked up but he didn't kill Alexander indicating he lacked one or more of the combo pieces. Alexander untapped and Topped again finding a Grindstone. He played Great Furnace and the Grindstone which resolved and he passed the turn. Joe left the Vial at one and drew for his turn passing with no land and no creature.
Alexander attempted Goblin Welder again on the next turn after playing a fetchland going for a Volcanic Island before Topping once again—this time into three lands. The Vial jumped to two this time and Joe cast Ponder keeping the cards and passing the turn. Alexander used the Grindstone on himself during the upkeep milling some lands but finding only an Intuition with the reset. During Alexander's end step Shaman en-Kor hit the board via Aether Vial. Joe untapped cracked Misty Rainforest for a Tropical Island and then put the Illusionist into play with Aether Vial. Alexander gamely tried to Pyroblast in response to an en-Kor trigger but Joe flipped the deck anyway and Alexander conceded rather than watch Joe play it out.

Alexander showboated a bit after picking up a hand that was close to the stones beginning with a Seat of the Synod and Pithing Needle on Nomads en-Kor. Tundra and Aether Vial hit the board for Joe while Alexander got farther ahead on the second turn. He played Ancient Tomb and used it to cast Nihil Spellbomb and Grindstone. “Wow this is going to be an interesting game” Joe said. Alexander played a second Grindstone and passed the turn tapped out. Brainstorm for Joe drew a few cards a fetchland following to sort through the clunkers. The fetch found an Underground Sea and Joe cast Cabal Therapy on Intuition—he was dismayed to see Painter's Servant alongside a Polluted Delta threatening to kill him next turn with a Mox Opal Ancient Tomb or City of Traitors.
Alexander drew a Pyroblast and decided to go ahead and cast the Servant rather than leave it in the grip as food for the Therapy's flashback. Once it resolved he named blue and destroyed Vial with Pyroblast. Joe just dropped a Misty Rainforest onto the field without cracking it and when Alexander topdecked a City of Traitors his dual Grindstones allowed him to mill the whole deck and respond to the Misty crack to do so again in case Joe had Krosan Grip for Painter's Servant.

The play's the thing and Joe had it in the third game which would decide the outcome of the Legacy Open. He kept a thoughtful hand beginning with Cabal Therapy via Underground Sea on Goblin Welder. He hit one revealing Force of Will Red Elemental Blast and a pair of Brainstorms in addition to an Island and Volcanic Island. Alexander played the Volcanic and passed. Joe found Tropical Island with Flooded Strand and cast Narcomoeba. Alexander responded with Brainstorm hiding an Ancient Tomb after showing it and one other card.
Joe flashbacked the Therapy to hit the other Brainstorm seeming to surprise Alexander with this play and taking a peek at the Mox Opal Alexander had drawn. Alexander played a Flooded Strand and passed. Joe replied with a Tundra go and Alexander fetched a Volcanic before playing a third one himself. Alexander played a City of Traitors and passed the turn back with hardcast Force available. Joe baited that out by casting Abeyance following with just a Ponder and keeping all three cards. He had a fetchland available to change that however.
Alexander lost his City of Traitors to an Island as he added a Tormod's Crypt to the board and passed the turn. Joe did crack the fetch but he didn't do much else passing the turn once again. Alexander drew and cast a second Tormod's Crypt turning on his Opal and adding an additional hoop to Joe's circus act. Joe cast Cephalid Illusionist into Red Elemental Blast passing the turn. Alexander topdecked a Sensei's Divining Top prompting a Force of Will pitching Daze from Joe. Joe Brainstormed during the end step following with a Worldly Tutor. “This is going to be fearsome” he said.
The Tutor gave him a Karmic Guide during his next draw step confusing Alexander. “Are you going to beat down?” Joe cast the Karmic Guide prompting a pop of one Crypt from Alexander. He topdecked a second Sensei's Divining Top on his own turn finding a Goblin Welder and Red Elemental Blast on the top. Joe paid his echo and began to attack while Alexander found a Goblin Welder and cast it. The next spin revealed Painter's Servant and Alexander popped to play it on blue.
Joe played a Preordain and sent both cards to the bottom attacking Alexander to 15. He added Shaman en-Kor to the field and passed to Alexander falling behind against the selection power of the Top. Alexander had nothing new and the beatdown continued in the sky. Alexander drew and cast Nihil Spellbomb but lacked any proactive action. He needed a shuffle effect of some kind and he wasn't using Goblin Welder to get free draws out of his Sensei's Divining Top by Welding it into the discarded copy.
Alexander fell to 9 in the sky and then began using Welder to draw cards with the Top. “Now things are worse” Joe admitted. Alexander continued to find only lands however adding a redundant Painter's Servant to the field. After another cycle of this he found Trinket Mage hoping to find a Grindstone and end this game. A Force from Joe met a Blast from Alexander and the Grindstone milled away Joe's deck.
