I first picked Shriekmaw and decided by pick 2 to avoid Red because I’d passed a Lash Out and Wort, Boggart Auntie. I stayed in Black, but only because Weed Strangle is also a fine pick, otherwise I would've taken the Lash Out since either Lash Out or Shriekmaw are easy splashes if we end up being cut for a color. I then hesitated between colors, having picked two Blue, two Green, and two Red cards, until a late Elvish Branchbender settled me into Green, as my Green and Black picks were the quality cards. Yes, the Blue and Red cards were the best cards of their packs, but that's because the packs did not have much, so I kept my options open.
I was fortunate to open a second Shriekmaw, which is ridiculous. Pick 18 I'm passed Timber Protector and I take it, as it's pretty good on it's own, even if I'm not on Treefolk, and there was nothing else comparable in the pack. Besides, it also combos well with Elvish Branchbender. My deck ended up being half Elves, half Treefolk, but that's more through fortune than desire. I was much more focused on picking up Elves, but since that was not possible, I took cards in my colors for my deck, which happened to be Treefolk.
Round 1 I played against a G/W deck and won easily, as he had either a weak deck or weak draws. Game 1 he conceded much earlier that I would have: the board was pretty stalled with creatures, and he was at 13. I attacked him with Shriekmaw and Marsh Flitter, obtaining his concession. Perhaps he had no way to deal with the fear, and no form of evasion. Game 2 I played a turn 4 Timber Protector, then Bog-Strider Ash and a pair of Elvish Branchbenders, so I had a pair of 5/5 indestructible forests every turn, plus a 3/5 Bog-Strider Ash. He conceded when I played Nath's Elite, even though I only had nineteen points of power on the table to his twenty life.
Round 2 my opponent was playing five-color Giants, including good stuff like Shriekmaw and two Incremental Growth. The game ended on turn 20, with the advantage being split evenly during the game. I died to an 8/8 Arbiter of Knollridge, as my Black removal was all in my last 13 cards. Game 2 he was slightly mana screwed, and I kept a slow but powerful hand: lands and two Shriekmaw. I killed some annoying creatures, but he neutralized both 3/2 fear guys... but they did deal him considerable damage. I had a Kithkin Daggerdare, drew a Marsh Flitter, then attacked for five damage, and five more for the win the turn after. I sacrificed a Goblin to turn him a 3/3, then attacked and pumped to make it 5/5. The ground was out of control already, with a 7/7 and a 6/6 from the other side. Game 3 he had a strong start, with Kithkin Daggerdare, Adder-Staff Boggart, and Fallowsage. I killed the Daggerdare with Eyeblight's Ending, and played Marsh Flitter. He played Incremental Growth, making the Boggart a 4/3 and the Fallowsage a 5/5, and one of my Goblins a 2/2. I blocked the Fallowsage 5/5 with the 2/2 plus the Faerie, and turned it into a 3/3 sacrificing the other goblin who chumped blocked. Next turn I played Elvish Harbinger for Eyeblight's Ending, and was still holding Weed Strangle. After I dealt with the next immediate threats, he just drew too many lands.
Round 3, I offered the draw but my opponent had a strong U/W deck and wanted to play. I played two Shriekmaws to kill his two Silvergill Dousers, and won easily. Game 2 he raced me with Sentinels of Glen Elendra, Pestermite, Mulldrifter, and three Whirlpool Whelm. Game 3 he made a misclick, which acted as a Time Walk. He has a Shelldock Isle, and tapped an both it and an Island for mana, but he used the Isle ability Instead. He did not met the "if" clause, so nothing happened. I still lost, because on my turn 12 I only had six Forests in play, and was holding only Black cards, including Eyeblight's Ending and Shriekmaw to deal with his Purity. I believe I lost when he sat at three life, and I had creatures plus Kithkin Daggerdare. I had seen three Whirlpool Whelm in the previous games, and he had already played one. I played a Nath's Elite and saw he has a Whelm #2 on top, and he left it there. I decided to attack with everything that turn, but he was holding one card... Whelm #3. Nothing happened in the attack, except that I lost a bunch of guys.
See you tomorrow!
