Pick 1: Unless we want to force something, our options for first pick are Pestermite, Merfolk Reejerey, and Wizened Cenn. I didn't want to go Kithkins so early, so I eliminated the Cenn. Reejerey is a more powerful card if you have Merfolk, but Pestermite is always good and leaves options open.
Pick 2: Even though I passed Reejerey, I took the Architects, trying to position myself for Blue, as this was the only Blue card of the pack. Looking back, I think I should have taken Militia's Pride: the card is very good, and you don't have to be Kithkin. It also goes well with Pestermite or fliers in general.
Pick 3: Since I had those two Blue cards, and already passed Wizened Cenn and Militia's Pride, it doesn't seem good to pick Changeling Hero, so I took Skeletal Changeling.
Pick 4: One solid Merfolk card (Stonybrook Angler), one solid Blue card (Broken Ambitions), one solid card overall (Moonglove Extract). I ignored them all, and took Smokebraider as a signal that I could go Elementals.
Pick 6: Having two Blue cards, two Black cards, and the Smokebraider, we can now take a playable Blue or Black card. I was still looking for Elementals, and took the Hearthcage Giant.
I could have ended the first Booster calmly set on Blue and Black, as the cards were there, but it wouldn't have a theme. It would just be solid cards. Pestermite and Weed Strangle the best ones, so I wasn't regretting trying to be Elementals just yet. Eventually Wort, Boggart Auntie and Mad Auntie made my deck more of a Goblins build, with a very small Faeries theme. I'm still running the Smokebraider, since people usually kill it on turn 2, and if not it can accelerate something, and it helps splashing for Briarhorn.
Round 1 I understood why I didn't see any cards for the Elementals deck, as my opponent was Blue/Red Elementals. Game 1 he played Flamekin Harbinger for a Mulldrifter, and a Flamekin Bladewhirl revealing Nova Chaser. The Bladewhirl died in combat, and I killed the Harbinger with Peppersmoke and the Mulldrifter with Shriekmaw. He was stalling the ground with two Mudbutton Torchrunners, but a Briarhorn convinced me to attack. Trades occurred, but Briarhorn saved my best creature and gave me another good body. When he finanaly got the 10/2 in play, he was almost in range of dying to a couple of activations of my Tar Pitcher.
Game 2 I play a turn 2 Facevaulter and turn 3 Runed Stalactite and equip. He attacks me with Inner-Flame igniter, and I don't trade, even though it's a 1/1 for a 2/2, because I'm holding Briarhorn and Peppersmoke... I wanted creatures on the table ready to attack, and Facevaulter counted as a Faerie. He passes on his turn 4. I attack, he plays Sentinels of Glen Elendra and blocks. I play Briarhorn and gain a huge tempo advantage. I followed that with Dreamspoiler Witches, then killed most of his defenses by playing spells on his turn. Peppersmoke, Footbottom Feast getting back Briarhorn, and Briarhorn for a second time, which was too much for the current board.
Round 2 I played against a Black/Red Goblin deck, splashing for some Elementals and a pair of Changeling Titans thanks to Smokebraider, so I guess I chose the wrong draft to try to be Elementals. Game 1 he got the Elementals draw, playing Aethersnipe and Mournwhelk, but I killed them and beat in the air. Game 2 he got the Goblins draw, including a Wort. I killed it with Lash Out. He brought it back with Warren Pilfererers, but I killed it again with my own Wort. Once again, I dealt most of the damage in the air, until he drew Marsh Flitter. However, he was too low on life, so I just made some careful attacks. Eventually I had enough time to draw something, as he had to stay on defense.
I split the finals.
See you tomorrow!
