Pick 2 and Pick 3: I stayed away from Blue since I had passed Guile and Mulldrifter Pack 1. I also had a Shriekmaw to fetch with Primal Command, and I like Smokebraider a lot. Besides, Shriekmaw is an elemental too.
I ended the first booster moving towards a Green/Black Treefolk deck.
P33: I hesitated for the full time, deciding between Weed Strangle and Mulldrifter. Mulldrifter is my favorite common, and my favorite card for Sealed Deck... but I took the Weed Strangle to stay in my colurs, as I love stable manabases. However, I had one Vivid Marsh so splashing for Mulldrifter was also an option. I prefer consistency, but doesn't mean it's better... it simply makes me feel more comfortable.
Round 1 I played versus a good Black/Red Goblins deck. Game 2 I was on the play and decided to not play Skeletal Changeling on turn 2 because I had two Battlewand Oak. I played them in my next turns. He killed one with a combat trick, but the other was always attacking and pumped, thanks to two Skeletal Changelings, Woodland Changeling, and Seedguide Ash. When the Ash died, I got the three Forests, and with that much mana, I played Footbottom Feast and a guy on the same turn, and set up the next turns too.
He got quite a nice curve in game 2, with a turn 2 Squeaking Pie Sneak, turn 3 Adder Staff Boggart (winning the clash, which was huge, as he could attack into my Skeletal Changeling), turn 4 Caterwauling Boggart, and any attempts I had to block on the next turn were foiled by a Glarewielder.
I mulliganed on the play and he got another good draw, involving early Goblins, topped with a Tar Pitcher and Hostility. I played Lignify on the Hostility to stay alive, but this left me with two problems: an active Tar Pitcher and a good blocker on his side. I did all the damage with a swampwalking Bog-Strider Ash, which gained me close to 20 life in between my Changellings and his Goblins spells... he played a lot, including Warren Pilferers twice and Boggart Birth Rite (which count as four life for me each time). I tried to survive the best I could with a regenerator, and some chump blocks. In a turn in which his Tar Pitcher was tapped, I killed it with Weed Strangle. Since most of his removal was damage based, he could not deal with the Swampwalker, and I dealt the final two in the last possible turn I could while containing his army.
Round 2 I played versus a Blue/White Merfolk deck. Game 1 he took control of the ground from the beginning with Judge of Currents, Harpoon Sniper, Goldmeadow Stalwart, Silvergill Douser, and something else. He was gaining life and preventing me from dealing damage, but without knowing he was giving me time to set up a huge Final Revels which killed all five of his creatures and only my Skeletal Changeling. It wasn't too hard to win after that.
Game 2 I accelerated into a turn 4 Shriekmaw killing his Veteran of the Depths. I dealt most of the damage with Shriekmaw, while playing creatures that would survive Final Revels, which I was holding. Since he never really tapped out to play something that stabilized the board, I did not need to cast the Revels.
I split the finals, even though this deck is quite good. The reason is that the prize difference is not that much, and it saves me playing an extra round, which leaves me more time to draft and playtest Constructed.
See you tomorrow!
