Pick 3: I love Cloadgoat Ranger, but I don't think White/Black is very good. Incandescent Soulstoke is also a nice card.
Pick 4: Weed Strangle would allow me to stay more solidly in Black, and get me ready to discard Red, but I think Lash Out is a better card and a signal to go Red.
Pick 5: Vivid Marsh or Sentinels of Glen Elendra? I wanted to keep my options open just in case I move into Blue.
Pick 6: With Aethersnipe, I could probably move into Blue. I usually draft it over Tarfire, but not with this setup, where I already had a late Lash Out and now a late Tarfire.
Pick 7: Again, no Black or Red card, but there's a Benthicore, which is an Elemental.
Pick 8: I have three Red cards, two Black Faeries, and two Blue cards. I still haven't decided on my colors, but probably Red/Blue or Red/Black, or less likely Blue/Black splash Red. With this pick between Hornet Harasser and Deeptread Merrow I'm taking a step into a direction for either Blue or Black. I choose Hornet Harasser... it seems stronger, and better in my deck. I don't have Merfolks, and in Black I have Marsh Flitter to sacrifice the Harasser.
Pick 11: At this point, even if I'm Red/Black, I don't have any reasons to play Boggart Birth Rite, and I can probably get one later if I want to. Still keeping the options open with this late pick Divers.
Pick 19: Multiple Consuming Bonfire can make my deck slow. At this point I know I want to be Red/Black, as two Lash Out, Tarfire, and Peppersmoke go very well with Dreamspoiler Witches.
Pick 24: Mistake! Even though I like Skeletal Changeling better than Fire-Belly Changeling, I am probably going to end up with many more Mountains than Swamps, and my final build should be aggressive.
Pick 28: I want the Vivid Crag, but I decided to be greedy and secure this Footbottom Feast that I might use, so that I don't have to take it later or regret that it didn't make it back. Maybe the Vivid Crag was too high a price to pay.
Round 1 I played versus Blue/White.
All the games were pretty bad, with lots of bad draws on both sides, and I was lucky to come out on top. Game 1 I drew 10 lands, 5 spells, and I lost. Game 2... at some point I had 4 Mountains in play, had played 4 Red cards and was holding 4 Black cards, and I still won. He may have mulliganed, and he played very few action spells. I drew the swamp, as I needed to play all four Faeries to win in the air. Game 3 I had a good draw, with a turn 2 Smokebraider. He slowed me down with Pestermite, tapping it on my upkeep. I played Inner-Flame Igniter and passed. I was holding Incandescent Soulstoke, Tarfire, Lash Out, and Caterwauling Boggart, so I exploded over the next turns.
Round 2 I played against Black/Green.
Game 1 he made turn 2 Fertile Ground, turn 3 Imperious Perfect, and turn 4 Warren PIlferers. He died on my next attack. I had won the die roll, played a turn 1 Flamekin Harbinger fetching Smokebraider, then turn 2 Smokebraider. Turn 3 play Inner-Flame Igniter and Soulbright Flamekin. Turn 4, active Soulbright Flamekin three times giving trample to everyone, and receive eight Red mana in my pool. Play Inner-Flame Acolyte, used the Igniter to give plus one attack to everyone, gave trample to the Acolyte, and attack. He blocked one with the Perfect, and was down to 7 life. Next turn I attacked again and won.
Game two, he had a much better draw... turn 1 Treefolk Harbinger getting Changeling Hero, turn 2 Fertile Ground, turn 3 Jagged-Scar Archers, turn 4 Hero. He drew one more Fertile Ground, the rest were all lands. He just had two unreal games.
I split the finals.
See you tomorrow!
