Pick 2: I think the possibilities are Tar Pitcher and Warren Pilferers. None of the cards combine well with my first pick. White/Black is a little awkward, and Tar Pitcher usually doesn't have many Goblins in Red/White. Whatever card I pick it's quite likely that either the first or second pick will be discarded or splashed. I went with Tar Pitcher, knowing I could try to go for Red/Black Goblins, where he shines, and he was still playable in White/Red... but it was all very dependable on the next boosters.
Pick 3: Moonglove Extract is a pick that keeps me in a waiting position for a little longer. Wizened Cenn pushes me into White and Kithkin, Boggart Mob takes me into Black/Red Goblins. Since I had the Tar Pitcher, I went for it.
Pick 5: All the cards in my colors aren't very good, I took Stinkdrinker Daredevil mostly because he's a Goblin, but perhaps Thieving Sprite would've been better. I just wanted plenty of Goblins costing two and three, to play Mob or Tar Pitcher turn 4.
Pick 16: Nothing spectacular to pick, and I like Mulldrifter enough to splash it. I wouldn't advise you to do it... I don't know if it's correct to splash Mulldrifter, but I like when I'm passed Mulldrifters in the second and third boosters.
Round 1 I played against Mark Herberholz. He was also Red/Black Goblins.
Game 1 he had Facevaulter comboing with Hornet Harasser and Mudbutton Torchrunner. He got one of them back with Warren Pilferers. It was good enough, as my life had taken some hits in the beginning from Changeling Berserker.
Game 2 was much longer, I left him really low on life, thanks to a big attack where my Goatsnapper stole his Changeling Berserker. He managed to stabilize, and kill me with a Cairn Wanderer, but at that point the game was very lost because of his Colfenor's Plans.
When I lose these long games, where I have plenty of decisions each turn, I always feel I could've played different. After rewinding the game in my head, I think I could've won on the turn where I stole Changeling Berserker with Goatsnapper.
He had Skeletal Changeling and Changeling Berserker, both tapped. I have Facevaulter, Boggart Harbinger, and I played Goatsnapper, leaving one Black, one Red open. I attacked with everyone. His life totals went to three. After combat I sacrificed Changeling Berserker to my Facevaulter, to get rid of it. The Thieving Sprite that was championed returned to play, and I responded to the discard with Tarfire.
I could've played Goatsnapper, attacked with everyone, and instead of using my single Black mana to get rid of Changeling Berserker after combat, I could've sacrificed Goatnapper to Facevaulter, to leave him at one. While holding a Tarfire. It's not an elaborate plan, it's not math, it's just like Sesame Street...
Playing on autopilot in a game where you have multiple decisions each turn causes these problems. Sometimes, the play that you are supposed to make most of the time will not win you the game.
See you next week!
