There are very few cards I pick over Mulldrifter Pick 1 Chandra Nalaar might be the last one on that small list, but it's still on the list. The next four packs were spread over four different colors, until a Consuming Bonfire plus a couple of Goblins for my Tar Pitcher established me in Red, as I'd hoped because of Chandra. Goblins go well with Black, so that's what I was looking for when I got a Footbottom Feast and a Facevaulter.
Pick 16 was blank. I wasn't going to splash Changeling Hero, and Fallowsage or Sentinels weren't good for my deck, so it was down to Cauterwauling Boggart. I decided to rare draft Thoughtseize instead.
Pick 31: It was indeed tempting to rare draft the Doran as well, as he may be worth more than Thoughtseize, but back then I had no good pick... this time, I did.
Round 1 I played versus Green/White/Blue. I won 2-0. One game he stalled on three lands for quite a while, and in the other I felt my cards were better as he was lacking removal and I had evasion.
Round 2 I played against another triple color deck
Game 1 I got a great start: Mudbutton Torhcrunner, Tar Pitcher, Marsh Flitter. I did some damage before he killed the Tar Pitcher. I had Birth Rite and Footbottom Feast, but instead I recurred the Torchrunner both times, as I had a really big tempo advantage thanks to the previous action with Pitcher. This allowed me to clear his blockers right away and attack for more damage.
Game 2 I kept a very slow hand, maybe it was a mulligan; four lands, Chandra, Consuming Bonfire, and Changeling Berserker. As long as I cast a spell by turn 3 or 4 I should be fine. Plus, in the previous game I saw 3 Swamps, 2 Island, and 2 Mountain from him... and I was hoping his deck wasn't that aggressive, and he had mulliganed. All these things summed, I decided to keep.
He surprised me, as he had a great curve. Turn 2 Cenn's Heir, turn 3 Springjack Knight, turn 4 Quill-Slinger Boggart, turn 5 Mulldrifter. The first spell I drew was turn 4 Adder-Staff Boggart, which traded with his Quill-Slinger Boggart. I played Chandra on turn 5 and killed Springjack Knight, now facing Cenn's Heir and Mulldrifter.
He attacked me and not Chandra with both, leaving me at 6 life. If he attacked Chandra, she would still be alive and with enough loyalty to kill a creature next turn. He played a Boggart Harbinger putting Warren PIlferers on top, and also played a Militia's Pride, but as he only had one Plains I knew he could only make one token next turn.
I played Warren PIlferers getting back Adder-Staff Boggart. He played Pilferers, got back the Boggart, and attacked with everyone, making a token. The Pilferers traded, and I was at one life.
The previous turn I could've used Chandra to kill Mulldrifter. I would've taken less damage with this play - this would've saved me 1 to 4 life points depending on his decisions with Pilferers - but I was confident I could control the game at one life, and I didn't want him to draw two extra cards.
At one life I killed his two non-token creatures, one with Chandra the other with the Bonfire I was holding since turn 1. He was down to a single 1/1 token. From here, I start taking control like I expected. He had one window to win the game, but he made the wrong decision and lost. It was with Spellstutter Sprite. Truth be told, if he had won with that card, I wouldn't have seen it coming.
I wanted to split the finals, but I waited 15 mins for the other match to be done, and then the server crashed.
(One hour later...)
The draft was gone.
Okay, GG, dead. I should've taken that Doran Pick 31.
See you tomorrow!
