Pick 1: I don't like this pick, and I wasn't happy with it. Now that I've had more time to think about it, I guess I should've picked Silvergill Douser. Not only is he the best card in the pack, but I'm not even sure Final Reveal over Tarfire is correct. The reason to avoid the Douser is because there are three very appealing Blue cards, so my initial reaction is to avoid and pass them on, hoping to set up a Blue line in front of me. This will not work with this pack, unless the person right after us has first picked a Blue card, because otherwise he'll just follow the same logic and pick Tarfire. Therefore we're setting up a Blue line for our neighbour, and not for our own benefict.
Pick 16: Rating these cards in a list, I would have Thundercloud Shaman first, then Nameless Inversion, and finally Ashling the Pilgrim, but in my deck it's another Elemental that can grow large, use Smokebraider mana, deal the final damage, and clear the board if needed. I think Thundercloud Shaman would hurt me when played, but to make things more confusing I even had a good changeling. Ashling got the nod over Nameless Inversion thanks to the reasons above.
Pick 17: I can splash Aethersnipe off a Vivid Land and a Smokebraider so far, hoping to get more of any of these. I don't like splashing that much, but nothing else is good here, and Oblivion Ring is even harder to splash.
Round 1 I played against Black/Green Goblins with Boggart Harbinger, double Fodder Launch, and Warren Pilferers.
Game 1 I won the roll and crossed my fingers, hoping the Smokebraider would live as I was holding Ashling the Pilgrim and two Consuming Bonfire. His turn 2 play was just Leaf Glider, so I untapped and played Pilgrim and pumped him. Nex turn I attacked, pumped him once, and played Marsh Flitter. He was forced to use a Fodder Launch on the Pilgrim before it grew too large, losing tempo and his plays for turns 3 and 4. I answered with another creature, and then I had removal to clear the blockers.
Game 2 I made some awkward trades, like Ashling the Pilgrim for Kithkin Daggerdare. Basically my plan was to keep the board free of creatures, then I cleared his hand with Mournwhelk evoked. I had Marsh Flitter and Footbottom Feast to ensure continuous good draws, while he drew half spells, half lands in topdeck mode.
Round 2 I played versus Blue/White Merfolk.
Game 1 I stalled on three lands for a while, which was actually good, because he used Oblivion Ring and Crib Swap on my two Smokebraider, and when I drew lands I had many spells to work with while he had already used some resources. The Thoughtweft Trio that came soon after was good enough to stop my entire army... except for Marsh Flitter, which got there.
Game 2 he started with a pair of Judge of Currents, which put him at 25 life, but I wasn't worried as my hand was quite good thanks to the Smokebraider I drew and played on turn 3. Then turn 4 I played Aethersnipe. Turn 5 I had the chance to play Final Reveals, killing my Smokebraider, and his two Judge of Currents plus Sygg, but I decided to be greedy and get even more profit out of Final Reveals, so I played Ashling the Pilgrim with mana to pump it twice. I grew it to a 3/3, and on my turn I used Smokebraider to turn him a 4/4, and played Final Reveals, clearing everything except for my Aethersnipe and the 4/4 Pilgrim. That was pretty much game.
I split the finals.
See you tomorrow!
